Mr Daniel Bull - Assistant Head of College - Mission (Acting)
We pray for our Year 12 students as begin their external exams this week. May the Holy Spirit and Mary our Good Mother guide these Marist men as they diligently apply themselves and strive to do their best.
We pray for those who are experiencing bereavement at this time. May God be a source of strength and hope for the living and welcome those who have died into everlasting peace.
A reminder that Fr Tini celebrates Mass every Wednesday Morning at 8am and Fridays at Break 1B in the College Chapel.
This Friday during Break 1B, as we contemplate the holy example of the saints, we will take time to commemorate our departed loved ones at a Mass for All Saints (1 November) and All Souls Days (2 November). Families, students and staff are warmly invited to attend Mass and write a prayer for a friend or family member who has died.
This Sunday continues Matthew 22 – a chapter focused on Jesus being questioned by the Jewish scholars called the Pharisees. One legal expert tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Matthew was writing for a Jewish Christian audience and juxtaposes the rigidity of the Pharisees with the liberating message of Christ. In Jesus’ time the Pharisees would knit-pick over the Jewish Laws – observing them at all costs. Here they try and trick Jesus. But He calmly responds by distilling the entire Old Testament into two key ideas: Love God and Love others. Faith is not simply about following rules – it is about a love for the Creator, and his Creatures.
Love of Neighbour says Jesus – is inseparable from Love of God. To be a Christ-follower is to do both. And this Love requires action. This materialises in many ways: Serving the poor, forgiving those who hurt us, and supporting the venerable. Jesus’ message to us is a call to empathy.
Ultimately, we love is what matters. Jesus’ identifies love as the principle that unifies and gives meaning to the world. Religious rules cannot be ends in themselves – they should act to guide people towards a life of Faith, Hope, and Charity.
Emmanuel City Mission has advised they are in desperate need for men's and women's socks and underwear, in all sizes, to support people experiencing homelessness and hardship.
Our Mini Vinnies have chosen to support ECM because having fresh, clean essentials helps people feel comfortable and treated with dignity. Donations of NEW underwear and socks can be dropped to the Marist Mission Office or Tower/Primary Reception from Monday 26 October to Friday 6 November.
Thank you for helping us provide everyday comfort, dignity and confidence, and for supporting our first Mini Vinnies project!
Clancy Doyle and Joseph Kuruku did a fantastic job on Friday making and selling popcorn at 1st break, as part of the Rush House effort to fundraise for Day for Daniel. These two gentlemen showed great initiative by reaching out to Mr Minogue to ask if they could run a popcorn stall alongside the students cooking snags and selling cans (Joey is in Rush, Clancy isn't but was keen to help!). After Mr Minogue gave them the thumbs up, the boys went about making sure everything was in place. Once they’d got the knack of the popcorn machine and the ratio of oil to corn kernels, there was plenty of quality popcorn and quite a few keen customers! Clancy & Joey are a great example of proactivity and service. And this is what our MATES program is all about – everyone pitching in together!
