Celebrating Book Week: A Symphony of Stories
Last week, our school community came together to celebrate annual Book Week under the inspiring theme Symphony of Stories. On Friday, students and staff explored literature through a series of engaging activities throughout the day, designed to foster a lifelong love for reading.
The morning started with our traditional Book Week Parade on the basketball court, where we saw a symphony of colours and creations. Students (and teachers) from all year levels displayed incredible creativity, stepping into the shoes of iconic classics and contemporary favourites alike. Everyone enjoyed the march, where every class showed off their Book Week characters to their parents and peers.
During the week, we had lunchtime clubs focused on activities aligned with the theme “Symphony of stories”. Some classes had Book Tasting sessions. Tables were arranged with books—spanning from historical fiction, graphic novels, science fiction, and poetry and picture books. Equipped with tasting menus, students spent time sampling opening chapters, recording initial impressions, and expanding their reading horizons beyond their usual choices.
On Wednesday, the author, Emma Gourlay entertained the Year 3-6 children and they enjoyed listening to her and then followed her advice to write their own stories. Emma is the author of Kip of the Mountain and Kip of the Karoo, an action-packed fantasy adventure series full of heart and fun.
Leaders led special read-aloud sessions across classrooms. They shared beloved picture books and foundational chapter excerpts, bringing stories to life with expression and fluency. These sessions highlighted the vital role of oral storytelling in developing comprehension, empathy, and auditory engagement across all age groups.
To conclude our festivities, some classrooms transitioned into cozy reading time. With lowered lighting and comfortable seating areas established throughout the learning spaces, students spent time immersed in their chosen books. The peaceful atmosphere provided a thoughtful end to an energetic day.
