College Updates

Science Update
Fun in Class
Year 7 Science D have been learning about forces in class. They have used this information to try and hit a target from a small distance with marshmallows. The students researched different designs to see which would work best and had to troubleshoot the amount of force required to hit the right spot.
Year 11 Biology
The photo below shows Year 11 Biology students completing an ELISA (Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay). Students have been learning to use scientific and social strategies to identify and contain the spread of pathogens.
Science Week
National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration for all things science and technology! We celebrated Science Week in Week 6 through daily quizzes and lunchtime experiments.
Students were also lucky to have Ian Southall and Dan Caffrey attend the college for an incursion where they learnt all about sustainable energy sources and gained an understanding of electricity, voltage, current and how to minimise their use. As part of the incursion, students were able to use the energy from their body (riding a bicycle) to power a lightbulb!
Thanks to everyone who made the week possible and to the students who got involved in the various activities on offer. Our hope is that students remain curious about the world they live in.
Parent Student Teacher Interviews
Parent Student Teacher Interviews are now open for bookings via Compass. The interviews are a great opportunity to discuss your child's progress and achievements in class this term. Interviews will be held on Thursday 17 September (4-7pm) and Friday 18 September (9am-11.30am). Please note that students are expected to attend the interviews. Please see image below for instructions on how to book in your interview/s. If a member of staff is unavailable during the allocated times, please contact them directly to organise a mutually convenient time to meet on 03 5127 9200 or via email/Compass.
Book Week
Book Week was celebrated in style in Week 7, with students having the opportunity to get involved in a range of activities in the library, a daily book quiz (with prizes, of course!), the Annual Book Swap (a great opportunity for students to grab some free books) and of course, the much-anticipated Book Week Dress Up Day on Thursday.
Book Week is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all things books and this year’s theme ‘Symphony of Stories,’ aimed to showcase the collection of characters, stories and places that books can transport you to.
Lowanna College thanks everyone involved in the success of Book Week and looks forward to Book Week 2027! Start thinking about your costumes
Musical Production Success
Congratulations to our amazing students and staff who were involved in the musical production of The Little Mermaid JR. Both public shows were well attended and we are so proud of the professionalism shown by all students involved, both the cast and crew. Lowanna College has not had a musical production in over 7 years and we are so pleased to bring it back through the LIA program.
Well done to everyone involved, we can't wait for next year's show!!
Year 8 LIA Auditions
Auditions are on Monday. Families should have received a letter with all relevant information. Good luck to all students involved!
School Holidays
Please be advised that the last day of classes in Term 3 is Thursday 17 September.

The General Office will be closing on Friday 18 September at 2pm and will reopen on Monday 5 October at 8am (start of Term 4).
Sports Update
Gippsland Soccer
Congratulations to our Year 7 girls who won at the Gippsland Soccer and advanced to the State Finals!
Intermediate Girls Soccer
Congratulations to the Intermediate Girls Soccer Team who made it through to State Finals, after being undefeated 4-1 in every game during the Gippsland Titles.
U17 Girls Basketball
Well done to our U17 Girls Basketball Team who played at the Champs Cup recently! The girls were competitive throughout the day, winning their first game against Flinders 34 - 38 and losing against Rowville and VCC.
SSV State Champions
What an incredible achievement by our Senior AFL boys, who dominated the SSV State Final to run out 125–23 winners and claim the SSV State Championship!
A truly historic moment for Lowanna College — our first SSV State title in more than 20 years!
U15's Champions Cup Basketball
The girls showed some great skills and determination over the competition. They won their first game to Edinburgh, they went on to lose to Rowville by only 4 points and in a very exciting close game against Western Heights, they won by only 2 points! The girls made it to the Semi Final again Berwick where they were challenged and couldn’t pull off the win. We are extremely proud of the girls considering they had four girls from Year 7 representing the team and were under sizes in height all day. The results from the day indicate that this age group are currently sitting 4th in the state which is an amazing achievement.
Year 7 and 8 Basketball Competition
Recently we had four teams represent Lowanna College at the West Gippsland Year 7 and 8 Basketball Competition. All four teams were undefeated and have advanced to the Gippsland stage next term.

Australian Scout Award
Congratulations to Year 9 student Chase who was presented with the Australian Scout Award earlier this term. The Australian Scout Award is the highest achievement in the Scout section, requiring Scouts to demonstrate leadership, outdoor skills and personal development.
Whether attending events like the Australian Scout Jamboree as a youth patrol leader, abseiling down a 30-metre natural cliff face or leading his unit to win the flagpole competition at Scout Fest, Chase embodies what it means to be a true Scout. Congratulations Chase!
Road Safety
Please see attached letter to find out how you can keep yourself and our community safe at pick-up and drop-off time.
Deb Ball Donut Fundraiser
Thanks to everyone who purchased donuts as part of our Deb Ball fundraiser!
Footy Colours Day
Thank you to everyone who donated money towards our fundraiser - the college raised over $900 to go towards MND research. A big thank you to our SRC who organised the day and cooked the BBQ lunch and to the canteen who donated the cupcakes that were sold on the day.
Falls Creek Snow Camp
Students who attended Falls Creek Snow Camp had a wonderful week on the slopes, making new friends and memories.
Barista Course
Our Year 10 Cafe Culture students completed their two-day barista course a few weeks ago. Thank you to Short Courses Australia for facilitating the course.
Outdoor Ed Update
Year 10 Mountain Biking Program
Our Year 10 Outdoor and Environmental Education students had fun mountain biking at Haunted Hills recently.
Year 12 Outdoor Ed Excursion
Earlier this term our Year 12 Outdoor and Environmental Studies class had the opportunity to go behind the scenes at Gumbuya World where they learnt about the practices they have in place and linked the theory they have been learning in the classroom to real world practice. Students learnt about how the pillars of sustainability relate to animals and business. While at Mount Cannibal they were able to observe the characteristics and assess the health of the environment and see how threats to outdoor environments can leave scars for years to come.
Year 9 Jump and Climb Excursion
Our Year 9 Outdoor Education students had fun participating in their recent climb session at Jump and Climb.
Year 12 Psychology Incursion
Recently, our Year 12 psychology students had a Therapy Animals Incursion on mental wellbeing.
