Technology Mandatory

Year 7 Technology Mandatory students are continuing to develop their precision cutting skills as they prepare and create delicious fried rice and rice paper rolls. Students are learning and practising professional knife skills, including julienne and brunoise cuts, while developing their accuracy, control and confidence in the kitchen.

Students are also putting their creativity to the test as they complete the research and design phase of their own unique muffin flavours. They have explored flavour combinations, developed design ideas and considered presentation. This week, students will bring their ideas to life by producing and evaluating their final muffin creations. We look forward to seeing—and tasting—their creative results!

Year 11 and 12 Hospitality

It has been a huge few weeks for our Year 11 and Year 12 Hospitality students, with students completing examinations, catering for the Principals Network Meeting, and putting their practical skills to the test during our Showcase Night mocktail service.

Students catered for the Principals Network Meeting, producing three delicious sliders — pulled pork, beetroot and halloumi, and Aussie beef burgers — along with freshly baked cinnamon scrolls.

Showcase Night was another fantastic real-life learning experience. Students prepared ingredients, cleaned and organised workstations, completed a pre-service briefing and trialled Hudson Lemonade, Biscoff Milkshakes and Appletinis before serving more than 100 mocktails in just 40 minutes from a very small kitchen!

These experiences have provided valuable opportunities to develop teamwork, communication, time management, customer service, organisation and the ability to work under pressure.

Year 11 will finish the term on a high, catering for the Year 12 Graduation and preparing another 100 meals for the Full Pantry Project, supporting families and contributing to our wider community. It has certainly been a busy and rewarding term for our Hospitality students!

Stage 5 Textiles Technology

Stage 5 Textiles students have had a fantastic start to the semester! Students proudly displayed their Semester One projects at our Showcase and impressed visitors with their creativity, skill and attention to detail. They also enjoyed participating in a fabric marbling demonstration, exploring how colour and pattern can be used to create unique textile designs.

The class is now putting their creativity into action as they finalise their design ideas and mood boards for their Term 4 embellished toy project. Some students have already begun cutting out their patterns and bringing their ideas to life.

Creativity is certainly flowing in the Textiles classroom, and I am incredibly proud of the quality of work, effort and individuality students are producing. I can’t wait to see their finished embellished toys!

Outstanding Science Extension Research

Year 12 Science Extension student Mylee Taylor has completed an outstanding research project investigating the effects of Multimin Evolution injectable trace mineral supplementation on Black Angus steers. Mylee conducted an authentic 63-day agricultural investigation involving more than 90 steers, comparing supplemented cattle with a control group. She monitored liveweight and analysed blood biomarkers associated with copper and selenium status, with support from local veterinary and agricultural professionals. Her results were particularly interesting. While supplementation did not produce a statistically significant improvement in liveweight, Mylee found a highly significant increase in the selenium-related biomarker GSHPx in treated cattle. This demonstrated that an improvement in mineral status does not necessarily translate into an immediate improvement in growth, a finding consistent with recent scientific literature.Mylee received an extensive result for her final project, reflecting the exceptional quality of her research, scientific analysis and communication. Her work will now be considered for submission to The Journal of Science Extension Research, which publishes outstanding research completed by NSW public school students.Congratulations, Mylee, on an exceptional achievement!

Central Schools Sporting Championships

Boorowa Central School students recently travelled to Dubbo to compete in the Central Schools Touch and Rugby League Championships. Our Under 16 Touch boys had an outstanding carnival, finishing with a silver medal. After a strong run through the competition, the boys defeated Lake Cargelligo 5–3 to set up a gold medal match against Walcha. They battled hard against a quality side but were eventually beaten 4–6. Finishing second in the region is a fantastic achievement, particularly after the team finished last in the Under 16 competition last year. Captain Billy led from the front and assisted by Rhylee really got the most out of the boys who went into the carnival thinking they wouldn’t threaten too much. The Under 16 Touch girls also competed strongly throughout the carnival. They finished their campaign with a 2–0 victory over Coolah to secure 5th place. In the Opens Touch, the boys finished 4th overall after defeating Dunedoo before going down to Woodenbong in their final match. The girls faced two tough games to finish the carnival, including a match against the eventual winners Uralla, and finished 5th overall. Boorowa also competed in the Central Schools Rugby League Championships. The Under 14 boys were hit by several late withdrawals and travelled to Dubbo with a small squad. Despite being under-strength, the boys continued to compete throughout the carnival and showed plenty of determination and team spirit. There were some tough results along the way, but the highlight was Mason O’s powerful run through the middle of the opposition defence to score a great try. Mason F and George also put in strong performances.A big thank you to Kirsten and Jordan, who assisted with refereeing throughout the week, and to Ms Porch, Mr Stuart and Ms Moorby for assisting with coaching and supporting the students. It was a big week of representative sport for Boorowa Central, with all students representing the school with pride, showing great sportsmanship and giving their best throughout the tournament.

Stage 5 Food Technology Serves Up a Feast!

Our Stage 5 Food Technology students put their skills into action at the recent School Showcase, producing an impressive 100 tasting plates of Japanese-inspired food for our guests to enjoy.

It was a fantastic whole-class effort, with students working together in the lead-up to prepare, cook and organise the food. The Showcase provided a wonderful opportunity for students to demonstrate the practical food preparation, presentation, organisation and teamwork skills they have been developing throughout Food Technology.

A special thank you to Amber, Kayla, Taylor, Ellie, Jaycee, Josh, Harry and Mia, as well as our Hospitality students, Jules and Corco, who generously gave their time to help in the kitchen on the night. Your hard work helped make serving 100 plates possible!

We were very proud of what the students achieved and hope everyone enjoyed the Japanese tasting plate.
