R U OK? Day at St Joseph’s Cobram

This R U OK? Day, our St Joseph’s community came together to explore how we can look out for one another, build positive relationships and support each other to ask for help when we need it.

We began the day with a whole-school assembly where our Catholic Identity student leaders introduced the four action steps of an R U OK? conversation and talked about how we can notice when someone may not be OK, ask the question, listen and help them connect with an adult for support. Our student leaders then interviewed two local community members, Adam Gatcum from Skillzone and Christine Osborne from Cobram Community House, learning about the important ways they support people in our community and how we can all encourage one another to check in and care for those around us.

During the morning session, our Foundation–Year 3 students developed teamwork, communication and cooperation skills through their Skillzone sessions (thank you Adam and Isaac). At recess, students were also invited to our Chill-Out Zone, providing a space to connect with others, relax, enjoy some gentle music and spend time together in the sunshine.

For our Year 4–6 students, our R U OK? Community Expo provided an opportunity to connect directly with local support services. Nine community service providers generously donated their time to run activities and games, speak with students and share information about the services they provide. Students collected resources to take home to their families and learned more about the people and organisations available within our local community to support children and families.

These experiences provided authentic opportunities for students to put into practice the skills we develop through our Victorian Curriculum Health and Physical Education and Respectful Relationships learning. In particular, the day supported learning around emotional literacy, positive relationships, communication, positive coping, problem-solving and help-seeking. The Victorian Curriculum identifies the importance of students developing empathy, building positive relationships, working effectively with others and developing strategies to support their own and others' health and wellbeing.

Our R U OK? Day activities also reinforced an important message that we revisit throughout the year: we don't have to solve someone's problems, but we can notice, listen, care and help connect them with a trusted adult or support service. This whole-school approach helps our students understand that creating a safe, respectful and connected community is something we can all contribute to every day.

Thank you to our student leaders, staff, guest speakers and community partners for helping make the day such a meaningful opportunity for our students to learn, connect and look out for one another. 💛
