        GRADE 5/6 CANBERRA CAMP

Our 5/6 students enjoyed many opportunities whilst attending Canberra Camp.

After a bus ride full of singing and chatting, students arrived at the National Capital Exhibition to learn how Canberra was designed to be the capital city.

We stayed in cabins at Alivo Tourist Park. On Tuesday, we unfortunately missed seeing the Prime Minister by a few hours however we enjoyed viewing Parliament House and held our own mock Parliament.

Throughout the week students enjoyed the sports arcade at Australian Institute of Sport, viewed the constitution at National Archives, found a 1kg gold coin at the Australian Mint, searched for natural items at the Australian Botanic Gardens, learnt history at the Australian War Memorial, held a mock fruit election at the Australian Electoral Centre, sat in Old Parliament House and explored the National Museum of Australia.

The evening highlights included exploring science and sliding down the vertical slide at Questacon. In addition, students played arcade games and worked in teams at laser tag. It was a jam-packed but very enjoyable camp!

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $45.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

As part of the library program at Sacred Heart, students write to pen pal authors to develop their interest and knowledge in writing.  Mason came across his pen pal, author Lellie Lopter at a book launch recently.  They both recognised each other with Lellie remembering some of the facts Mason had shared with her.  Mason ‘traded up’ a drawing for her book and also  bought a copy which he donated to the school’s libray.  What a treat for Mason to meet one of his idols!
