Book Week Adventure – Class 5/6 JJ
This week, Class 5/6 JJ have been on an adventure, celebrating the theme of this year’s Book Week: “Book an Adventure.”
We began by reading Freya Blackwood’s picture story book The Garden of Lost Things. Together, we reflected on how the old can become new again when it is valued rather than discarded.
Students then set out on their own “adventure” in the playground, searching for a small piece of rubbish. Each found object was given a new purpose as part of a plasticine garden they created. Their gardens were inspired by the story’s forgotten garden, which was brought back to life through the courage and imagination of Sadie, the main character.
Some students shared what their “lost things” became:
- “For my garden I did a calm river with log of wood and for the rubbish that I used for it was a bit of string and I made it into a rope swing” Andy N
- “My lost thing was an Easter egg wrapper. I made my Easter egg a mythical egg and kept it safe near a tree with a beehive so if someone touches the egg the bees will charge at them. James N
- “My lost thing was a piece of ribbon which became a zipline in my garden” Tilda M
We also discussed the theme of adventure and shared books that have taken us on journeys of the imagination. Abuk said that she was transported on an adventure when reading Once by Morris Gleitzman, because she was able to see the impact of war through the eyes of two young people, Felix and Zelda. Students also shared what adventures they would like to go on. Vinhson said his dream would be to travel to Brazil and learn the art of soccer.
As part of our celebrations, students enjoyed creating a colourful door display with their adventure ideas floating away in a hot air balloon. And of course, the grand adventure of the annual Book Parade carried us all into the wonderful world of books and stories. It truly was magical.
Here are a few colour characters from our class:
- ‘I am a green crayon’ Aluel N
- “I am dressed as the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland. My friends Clem and Isla dressed up as the Mad Hatter and Alice.” Edith J V
- “My friends and I dressed up together, I am the Cat in the Hat, Tilda is Sally and Maya and Jasia came as Thing-One and Thing-Two” Angelina P
- “Today I am dressed up as one of my favourite soccer players Lamine Yamal”. Aristovoulos B
In 5/6 JJ we are always reading for the next adventure!
