We begin this term with the launch of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, from 23 July to 2 August 2026. Athletes from 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are competing in a streamlined program featuring 10 sports and multiple para-sport events.
You might not know, but Glasgow stepped in as host after the Australian's very own state of Victoria withdrew from hosting due to rising costs. The 2026 Games use existing venues across the city, making them one of the most cost-effective Commonwealth Games in history.

- Cycling and Para Cycling
- Gymnastics
- Boxing
- Judo
- Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting
- Netball
- Bowls and Para Bowls
- 3x3 Basketball and Wheelchair Basketball
Fun Facts About the Current Games🌟
- Australia is currently leading the medal table, demonstrating its traditional strength at the Commonwealth Games.
- Glasgow is hosting the Commonwealth Games for the second time, having previously hosted them in 2014.
- These are the first Commonwealth Games held during the reign of King Charles III as Head of the Commonwealth.
- Glasgow 2026 includes a record level of integrated para-sport competition, continuing the Games' commitment to inclusion.
- There is no dedicated athletes' village. Competitors are staying in existing accommodation around Glasgow to reduce costs.
More than 2,700 athletes are competing during the Games.
Why are the games important and what can we at Holy Family learn from them?
The Commonwealth Games bring together athletes from across the Commonwealth to celebrate sport, friendship, diversity, and cooperation. They provide an opportunity for athletes to represent their countries on an international stage while promoting unity and respect among nations. The games teach us about sportsmanship, respect, friendship, inclusivity and appreciating diversity. I look forward to sharing stories with students about some of the key moments of these games over the coming weeks.

Make sure you have filled in the permission forms on compass. A reminder that students must make their own way there. Students to arrive 45 minutes prior to their event at least. We will be sending out the timetable once the final schedule is released by the organisers at CSBB.
