Outstanding Achievement in Apex Debating Competition
On 12 August, the MAG debating teams proudly represented the School in both the Junior and Senior Apex Debating Grand Finals, after both teams secured victories in the opening round last term.
Held at the Moama Bowling Club, the Grand Finals saw both MAG teams compete against Australian Christian College.
The Junior team, consisting of Francesca Starritt, Georgia McIntosh and Rosie Grant, argued the affirmative case that the legal voting age in Australia should be lowered to 16. Building on their impressive performance in the first round, the team presented a confident and convincing case, demonstrating just how much their speaking, rebuttal and improvisation skills had developed throughout the competition. Their efforts were rewarded with a Grand Final victory, bringing the Junior Apex Debating Shield back to MAG for the first time since 2015. An outstanding achievement!
Our Senior team of Alanna McKee, Charlie Martin and Luca Caniglia, supported by researchers Nate Holgate and Gonzalo Duffy Oport, tackled the challenging proposition: “That young regional Victorians do not receive equitable access to government-funded services compared with metropolitan Victorians.”
Arguing the negative case, the team faced formidable opposition and responded with thoughtful, well-reasoned arguments, strong rebuttal and even a few clever debating tactics picked up along the way. In an extremely close contest, they narrowly missed out on the win, though they should be incredibly proud of the quality and maturity of their performance.
Both teams deserve enormous credit for their achievements throughout the competition. Debating is much more than simply delivering a prepared speech, requiring students to think on their feet, respond under pressure and stand before an audience and judging panel to convincingly argue a position they may not even personally agree with.
Our students approached that challenge with poise, courage and conviction, representing MAG with distinction. Congratulations to all of our debaters and researchers, with special congratulations to our Junior team on bringing home the shield!
Netball Victoria Schools Championships
With the weather threatening, 60 students, coaches, umpires and scorers headed to Bendigo for the Netball Victoria Schools Championships.
The Secondary teams competed well across four or five games, depending on the number of entries, with our Year 7 and 8 team finishing equal second in their pool.
The stars of the day were our Grade 5/6 teams, who were both highly successful. Our Grade 5/6 Girls team was able to use its knowledge and experience to defeat the Mixed team in two keenly contested games and secure a place in the Finals Day on Wednesday 2 September at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.
The Mixed team showed significant improvement throughout the day, providing valuable match practice ahead of Phase 2 of the NSW Schools Cup on Wednesday 9 September in Wagga.
Thank you to our coaches for their extra training sessions and specialist guidance on game day, particularly Suzie Williams and Ashley Campbell, who were enthusiastic and supportive of all Primary players.
Thank you also to Chelsea Angove, Ruby Simson, Renea Harris, Sharon Moon, Sarah McKee and Brenda Stenning, our umpires.
Students Compete at Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships
Last week, four students recently competed at the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships, taking part in a range of skiing and snowboarding events.
Maelle Lyle achieved her best results to date, finishing 61st in the Division 3 Girls Ski Giant Slalom and an impressive 35th in the Division 3 Girls Ski Cross. Maelle narrowly missed qualification for the top 32 finals by just 0.2 seconds, a terrific achievement in a highly competitive field.
Nixon Lyle also competed strongly in the snowboarding events. He placed 10th in the Division 2 Boys Snowboard Giant Slalom and qualified 3rd in Snowboard Cross (SBX). Nixon went on to finish 4th in the final, missing a podium position by an incredibly small margin of just 0.10 seconds.
These outstanding results have earned Nixon qualification to represent Moama Anglican Grammar at the Australian Interschools Snowsports Championships at Perisher next week.
It was wonderful to have four students representing the School at the Victorian Championships this year, and they should all be very proud of their efforts, commitment and sportsmanship. We congratulate all competitors on their achievements and wish Nixon every success at the upcoming national championships.
