Book Week in the Junior School

The Junior School was filled with colour, creativity and literary magic on Tuesday as students and staff enthusiastically participated in our annual Book Week Dress-Up Parade.

This year's Book Week theme, Symphony of Stories, invites us to reflect on the way stories, characters, ideas and words come together in perfect harmony, much like the instruments in an orchestra, to create memorable reading experiences that resonate long after the final page is turned.

We were delighted to see such an impressive array of book characters brought to life by our students and staff. The effort, imagination and attention to detail on display made it a challenging task for the Library team when selecting a top-dressed character from each class. In particular, we looked for students who carefully captured the unique intricacies of a recognisable book character. It was especially helpful when students carried the book that inspired their costume, and we greatly appreciated this thoughtful touch.

A special mention goes to James Di Carlo (5G), who dressed as a character from the book he wrote for the Br Gerry Faulkner Competition for Young Writers and Illustrators. Congratulations, James, on creatively combining two library initiatives into one outstanding costume!

The celebrations are continuing with our Bookmark Design Competition. Every Junior School student is invited to submit a bookmark design inspired by the 2026 theme, Symphony of Stories. Entries are due on Monday 31 August. The winning design will be professionally printed and become the official library bookmark for the remainder of the year. We can't wait to see the creativity and imagination showcased in the submissions!

Book Week will continue into next week as we enjoy a special visit from Broome-based author and illustrator Brenton McKenna, Australia's first published Indigenous graphic novelist. Students will have the opportunity to hear about his journey as an author and illustrator, the inspiration behind his work, and the power of storytelling to share culture, identity and experience.

As we celebrate Book Week, we are reminded that every book has the power to transport us to new places, introduce us to new perspectives and spark our imagination. Reading opens doors to endless possibilities, helping us to grow in knowledge, empathy and understanding. Whether we are turning the pages of a beloved favourite or discovering a story for the first time, every book adds a new note to our own unique symphony of stories.

Did you know that the Trinity College Library had a collection of eBooks and eAudiobooks available to borrow via the BorrowBox app?

Access to BorrowBox is free for Trinity students and they can log-on using their regular school username and password. This may be particularly useful for travel this school holidays and can even be enjoyed as a whole family. Why not try listening to an eAudiobook in the car as a family whist driving to your holiday destination?
