As the end of the 2024 school year draws near I would like to congratulate all Year 9 students for their success this year. It has been a pleasure working alongside each student and their families, watching them grow into young adults.  From the Year 9 Team we wish you a happy and safe Christmas, New Year and Summer holiday.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)

As previous years we will be continuing the use of Kurnai Positive Acknowledgements (KPA’s), it has been fantastic to see students settling back into the Kurnai Learning Community and being acknowledged for their efforts within the classroom.

HPV Energy Breakthrough

From Heat to Rain: A True Test of Endurance!

Kurnai College’s Year 9/10 Human Powered Vehicles (HPV) teams worked tirelessly over the course of the year to construct their vehicles and in preperation to  participate in the 24hr Energy Breakthrough HPV Race at Maryborough last weekend.

The students travelled and arrived in Maryborugh on the Thursday, where they spend the afternoon setting up camp and their pit lane. On the Friday the students were tested on their knowledge on sustainability and renewable energy, and presented to a panel of judges their knowledge of the design and construction of the human powered vehicles. The students will get then had a two hour practice run on the course Friday evening before the 24hr race commences at midday on Saturday, running through until midday Sunday.

After scorching temperatures on the Saturday, the conditions took a dramatic turn! Overnight, 40ml of rain soaked the track and put our HPV Energy Breakthrough teams and their bikes to the ultimate test. But despite the challenges, our resilient riders pushed through, completing the grueling 24-hour race with pride and a huge sense of accomplishment.

Here’s how our amazing teams finished:

Pitstop: 8th in Category, 52nd Overall – 401 laps / 633.58km

Flpped: 5th in Category, 74th Overall – 311 laps / 522.98km

Return to Pits: 15th in Category, 89th Overall – 284 laps / 448.72km

Final results combine scores from Display and Presentation, Design and Construction Inquiry, and Track Performance.

A huge congratulations to the Year 10 Pitstop team, who won the 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 & 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 for their category (B2 - mixed team up to Year 10). This is a back-to-back accomplishment – what an achievement!

A massive congratulations to all our riders for their incredible effort, determination, and teamwork through such tough conditions. You’ve done us all proud!
