How to talk to your child... About reframing labels.

Why labelling can be dangerous: Many parents, teachers and caregivers label their children without realizing it. When a child is labelled, it becomes a part of their identity. Labelling affects the way a child sees themselves, can influence how others treat them and can limit their potential.

How have you been labelled?

Talk to your child about how others labelled them in the past? Have your child make a list of labels, both good and bad. It could also be helpful for yourself to create a list of labels you had a child as well.

At CGPS we value Disability Inclusion. If you and your family would like something amazing to watch over the school holidays, Mrs Kelly highly recommends Out of my mind on Disney Plus. A girl named Melody, while navigating Grade 6 with cerebral palsy, shows that what she has to say is more important than how she says it.

Wellbeing – Mpower Girls Program - Term 4

The end of term 4 saw the completion of the Mpower girls program for selected students across the grade 5 cohort. The Mpower girls program ran over the majority of Term 4 and was aimed at getting female students to be more mindful of how they think, talk and act towards each other. Each student was given specific skills to effectively problem solve peer issues, to be assertive in conflict situations, reduce stereotyping and be more mindful of how their actions affect their peers.

I would like to say a big congratulations to the following students for completing the Mpower girls program this term! Well done girls!

Safe Socials – For parents and carers (Primary)

The Department of Education has released a webpage full of tips and resources for parents, carers and families to support primary school students to be safe when using social media.

City of Casey Youth Counselling and Support Service (YCaSS)

The City of Casey Youth Counselling and Support Service (YCaSS) provides free and confidential counselling support for young people aged 10-25 with links to the City of Casey.

YCaSS is an accessible service as no Mental Health Care Plan or Medicare card is needed, so support can commence without delay. This support is provided face to face at one of our Youth Information Centres (Narre Warren, Cranbourne, Hampton Park) or through telehealth via phone or video call.

If a client engaged with a private psychologist reaches the end of their funded sessions, YCaSS can support the psychologist, the client and provide maintenance sessions until the client can re-access a mental health care plan.

YCaSS provides the following supports:

Youth Counselling: Individual counselling for young people 13-25
Parent Support Sessions: Brief intervention for parents of children aged 10-25 on parenting strategies and psychoeducation for their children
Children’s Counselling: For young people aged 10-12, with parent or guardian involvement when needed to support the counselling process
