"You, Me and Us" - Year 12 Artists First External Exhibition
From Thursday, 9th October until Tuesday, 21st October, our talented Year 12 Art Making and Exhibiting students proudly unveiled their first external art exhibition at the Cardinia Cultural Centre. The showcase, titled You, Me and Us, represented a milestone moment for Pakenham Secondary College - the first time our students’ artworks have been displayed beyond the school grounds.
This inspiring opportunity was made possible through the generous support of the Cardinia Cultural Centre, whose partnership allowed our students to share their creativity with the wider community.
A huge thank you goes to our Head of Art and Technology, Ms Emily Schinzig, whose leadership and passion for the arts guided students throughout their creative journey. Ms Schinzig’s opening speech on the exhibition night eloquently celebrated the students’ achievements and the depth of thought behind their remarkable pieces.
The exhibition featured stunning works by Kieran James, Axel Liebe, Jamaique Mathieu, Dylan Purvis, Asher Stone, and Marshall Sungalis, each exploring unique and thought-provoking ideas.
According to the exhibition statement:
“This group exhibition brings together the culminating work of our VCE Art Making and Exhibiting Year 12 students, offering a reflection on the connections between the self and the wider world. These artworks explored deeply personal experiences alongside broader themes of society, culture, identity and change.”
Throughout the year, students studied artists who inspired them, developing their own ideas through experimentation with materials, techniques and symbolic expression. Their works explored powerful concepts - from greed and inequality, to grief, fragility, transformation and the human experience of mental health.
One artwork depicted Queen Marie Antoinette alongside malnourished sheep to symbolise societal greed; another used facial expressions to portray grief and loss. Others examined the fragility of humanity and nature, the chaos of obsessive-compulsive thoughts and even reimagined classical stories such as that of Prince Hyacinthus. The symbolism of hair featured in another piece, representing change, transformation and identity.
Together, these artworks formed a collective conversation - a space where individuality meets connection. You, Me and Us invited audiences to reflect on the ties that bind us all, offering a moving and memorable experience for everyone who attended.
Congratulations to our incredible Year 12 artists and to Ms Schinzig for this outstanding achievement!
