GYMSTARS - The little school from the Peninsula shines brightly in talent and in uniform!
What a spectacular day it was last Tuesday, 26th August at Knox Gymnastics Centre for the State Gymstar Schools Championships. Although the day started VERY early with a 6.45am bus pick up and didn't return until 5.00pm, there were 50 proud, happy faces afterwards and so many stories to report back to family members. Having learnt 7 different gymnastics routines over the past 8 weeks of training in Vault, Parallel-Bars or Beam, Safety, Uneven Bars, Rings, Floor and Acrobatics, clad in the finest of new gymnastic uniforms, we nervously, but excitedly took to the huge gymnastic arena with our teammates.
With each routine scored out of 15 and many scores above
14 to note, as coaches, Sarah Pancic and I could not have been any prouder of all of our gymnasts. It was fantastic to see so many boys and girls stepping out of their comfort zone to try something new, with every student saying they couldn't wait to take part next year and the Year 6s very glad to have had the opportunity in their final year at St Joseph's, with fond memories for them of the day.
Against many prestigious and private schools across the CBD and regional areas of Victoria, we performed proudly and cheered loudly! On the day, we took out 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th placings from the 7 teams that performed together, an incredible achievement!
While we plan to show a sample of some of the routines at a SPECIAL ASSEMBLY before the end of term, along with a FULL SLIDESHOW VIDEO to give you all an idea of the day's events, feelings and memories, here a few photos of our wonderful teams:

A huge thank you to Angela and Louise for organising the impressive new uniforms that all judges commented on as being the standout uniforms! We all looked so professional. Thank you to Fi and the other mums for assisting with hair preparation and supervision. Thank you to Lynne, Giulia, Louise, Assunta and all parents who assisted with the Friday training sessions. The students have developed incredibly during the program thanks to your support and assistance. Thanks to Jess Lumsden, Jas Gregory, Monica O'Shannassy and Louise Heinnen for accompanying a team on the day around the arena and for the many, many parents who made the drive to Wantirna South to cheer for and support our 50 students who took part.
A special thank you to my colleague and fellow gym coach, Sarah Pancic. We have done this together on and off for over 12 years now and I appreciate her expertise and input so much to the program. We hope to be able to continue offering the Gymstars Training and Competition in the future and welcome your feedback or photos from the day. WHOLE SCHOOL ATHLETICS DAY
Today, Monday 1st September, ALL students from Prep to Year 6 boarded buses to participated in our Whole School Athletics Day held at Southern Peninsula Athletics Centre, Rosebud. Our Preps to Year 2 students took part in fun modified athletic activities that included 60m sprints, the long run, discus hoops, mini shot put and long jump. Our Years 3 to 6 students completed their remaining athletic trials in long jump, 800m, 100m, 200m, hurdles, discus and shot put and are hopeful of making it into the St Joseph's Aths Team who will next week compete at Mornington Athletics Centre if selected.
The key focus though was to have fun, compete for House Team Points and Spirit Awards (10 pointers) and to enjoy having a go at a variety of different athletic events. Just as important was the school community involvement in putting on such a wonderful day for the students, parents, grandparents, toddlers ad staff alike!
I look forward to sharing many of the beautiful and colourful photos and videos from the day in our Week 9 Sports Newsletter. Look out for our socials too!!
Warm Regards,
Jenny Todd
