From Nigeria to Hamilton

My name is Debby (Dorcas), and moving from Nigeria to Hamilton has been one of the biggest changes of my life. Back in Nigeria, life was loud, busy, and full of familiar faces. I grew up surrounded by family, friends, and a culture I understood without even thinking about it. There was always something happening — music, food, laughter, and community everywhere.

Coming to Hamilton felt like stepping into a completely different world. My first impression was how quiet everything was. The streets were calm, the weather was cooler, and the pace of life felt slower. At first, it was strange, but it also felt peaceful in a way I wasn’t used to.

Joining the school here has been one of the best parts of the move. I’ve enjoyed meeting new people, learning how things are done in Australia, and discovering that even though the culture is different, people are kind and welcoming. I’ve especially enjoyed the sense of space — the open fields, the fresh air, and how close everyone seems to nature.

Of course, there were challenges. Adjusting to the accent, the food, the weather, and being far from home wasn’t easy. But each challenge has made me stronger and more confident. I’ve learned to speak up, to ask questions, and to trust myself in new situations.

The differences between Nigeria and Australia are huge — from the school system to the lifestyle — but those differences have helped me grow. Moving here has taught me resilience, independence, and how to appreciate both where I come from and where I am now.

This journey has changed me, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
