Athletics Carnival

Mr Peter McLeish

It was a lovely warm afternoon for our annual athletics carnival. Well it was in the recorders’ room. Congratulations to all who contributed to the successful running of the carnival. From Terry and Pat for the way our magnificent oval was presented to Anne and her band of helpers who kept the teachers fed and watered during the day and to Mark and Camilla for their organisational skills. But carnivals don’t happen without the competitors. This year saw one of the largest participation rates for many years.

RUN, THROW, JUMP: Participation was great on the day.

The House Captains and the Sports Captains should also be congratulated for encouraging so many students tomake the effort to get up, get out and have a go.Unfortunately, no records were broken but there were some outstanding individual performances.

Basketball

Mr Daman Roff

O'Connor basketballers compete in the Armidale Basketball Association competition that takes place on Tuesday evenings. At present we are fielding a Year 7 team, a Year 8 team , two Year 9 teams and a Year 10 team. Some of our students also help by refereeing and scoring. Recently we had our own version of State of Origin, mate versus mate, when the two Year 9 teams clashed. Robbie Flint top scored for the Prophets while Gabe Harris top scored for the Corinthians. It was such a good game that the author of this report can't remember who won! To ad to the spectacle, the fiery encounter was officiated by John Harris in Year 10 who managed an excellent contest.

Schools Netball Cup

Mrs Shane Moffitt

On Wednesday 25 May, Armidale put on a beautiful Autumn day for the 2022 NSW Netball Schools Cup. O'Connor had 9 teams competing and all did so with energy and enthusiasm. We have had four teams progress to the next round to be held in Tamworth in September. Our Year 9 Boys, Year 10 Boys, Year 7/8 Girls and the 9/10 Girls team dominated their pools and were gracious winners.

Just a few highlights of the day include the highly physical and competitive game between our own Year 9 and 10 Boys, Year 7 Boys who were the enthusiastic first-time netballers, and the mixed ages/sexes social games that happened at the end of the competitive rounds full of good-natured rivalry.

Students with standout team-spirit and performance on and off the court were Georgie Schultz, Salisar Poomipak, Regent Nugent, Maria Suluma, Jo Schumde, Sam Hayes and Amelia Roberts (who came in a support role).  Students overall were a credit to the school and joy to have at the carnival.

Very special thanks to the Miss Trigwell-Lindley, Miss Honeysett, Mr Russell, Mrs Magann and Ms Mellowship for their help and team spirit on the day.

Hockey NSW U18 State Championships

Emma Gray, Imogen Hislop , Ava Vaughan and Mia Vaughan have participated in Hockey NSW U18 State Championships.

Emma,, Ava  and Mia  played for Hockey New England in Div 2 and Div 4 and were undefeated over the weekend and made it to the grand finals on Sunday. At full time the teams had a draw result and the games went to penalty shoot outs with their team gaining runner up position when the final whistle blew.

Imogen played for Tamworth and although not making the finals had a very enjoyable weekend. Imogen also umpired over all divisions the weekend and she did an amazing job.

Well done to our hockey stars!
