Year 8 Geography Zoo Excursions

All Year 8 students undertaking Geography studies during Semester 1 had the wonderful opportunity to partake in a fun day at the Melbourne Zoo. This excursion served as geographical fieldwork, focusing on the importance Rainforest Biomes.

Zoo educators held walk and talk programs for the students, concentrating on the importance of recycling mobile phones and choosing grocery items with clearly labelled sustainable palm oil.  Unsustainable palm oil is currently not correctly labelled on many products in Australia, causing the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, and the mineral coltan is mined in the Congo rainforest basin to produce batteries in our mobile phones.

Students visited rainforest animals including orangutans, Western lowland gorillas, Sumatran tigers and Asian elephants. They also enjoyed close encounters inside the lemur and butterfly exhibits.

Thank you to all the staff who attended the excursions, and especially to Ms Cindy Bryant and Mr Brendan McKinnon for their efforts in organising these fabulous experiences.
