From the Junior School

It is hard to believe that we are at the end of 2021!

It’s been a wonderful year of sport in the Junior School with participation high at all carnivals and most sports well presented. Netball and basketball continue to have high participation rates and going forward I hope to see sports such as tennis and cricket grow in numbers.

Our year started on a high with Maya Bearman awarded the Bill Henderson shield for the best Year 6 female swimmer at the JSSATIS swimming carnival.

To cap the year off, our Year 5/6 Division 1 basketball team took out third place in a hotly contested 2021 Basketball Tasmania Primary School State Championships held at the weekend.

I feel the biggest success of sport this year is the way our St Mary’s College students continue to conduct themselves on and off the field and at representative carnivals. Each game or sporting event I attend, I see our students continually demonstrating the four Rs of respect, responsibility, resilience and relationships. Our students always show great sportsmanship and most importantly, have fun. I am always very proud to see our students participate at any level.

We say this every year, but we truly are so grateful for the support of our parents and carers who give up their time to officiate at carnivals, coach, transport and cheer on our students at each game and event. Your support does not go unnoticed, and it really is true that it would not be possible without you all. Thank you!

Lastly, I would like to wish all the Year 6s the best of luck as they move to the Senior School—it is always a bittersweet moment seeing our Year 6s go but knowing they will have the opportunity to spread their wings and grow makes that blow a little easier to take!

I wish everyone a safe and happy festive season and I look forward to seeing returning families in 2022.
