Music Camp
The Music department recently embarked on our annual Music Camp. After a two-year hiatus, this event was looked upon with a lot of excitement and, after such a long break between camps, a bit of nervousness too. In total there were 163 instrumental and vocal students who participated in camp.
Sadly, the weather was unremittingly wet and rainy, which meant that we were unable to take full advantage of the beautiful grounds of Forest Edge camp. All the students and staff displayed a commendable level of flexibility in working around the inclement weather.
Music Camp gives the instrumental music students an opportunity to bond over rehearsals and activities. As well as ensemble rehearsals, there were musical electives and activities. On the first evening, the Performing Arts Captains ran a very entertaining trivia night. On the second night, the camp goers were all treated to a performance evening given by the Year 11 and 12 VCE Music students. On the last day, everybody worked together to pack up the trucks and leave in a timely manner.
Over the three days, all of the ensembles were able to immerse themselves in learning music for the upcoming Gala Concert next term. The three days passed quickly and everyone made great musical strides. We’re already looking forward to next year’s camp.
Here's a sneak peak at some of the pieces being rehearsed:

Victorian School Music Festival
The Victorian School Music Festival involves school bands, orchestras, jazz ensembles and choirs performing in some of Victoria’s premier performing spaces including the Hawthorn Arts Centre.
Performing at VSMF is the full sensory experience with young musicians performing on stage in their ensemble, receiving given immediate feedback on stage from a highly skilled adjudicator. Participants are involved in listening to others in performance, watching how it can be done differently with opportunities to analyse their own performance back at school by listening to the recording and watching the video provided.
Next term the Wantirna College String Orchestra, Concert Band and Symphonic Band will perform at the VSMF, Hawthorn Arts Centre.
