I trust that students and their families are keeping well and putting their best foot forward while maintaining a focus on their physical and mental health. The Childers team is looking forward to seeing you all at school and making the most of what Term 3 and 2020 has become. Our student leaders, even in isolation have been working hard to put together a Philanthropic Day.

Daffodil Day

It will be the Childers House’s turn with a Philanthropic Day on August 28. With us still learning online at that stage we are encouraging students to embrace the day even from home. We ask families who can, to consider donating to the Cancer Council. Usually we would raise between $2500 and $3000 each year. At this point this seems like an impossibility, so we have aimed to promote the day instead. Our team is working hard to digitalise our traditional events and perhaps create new traditions and rituals.

Iso Out-Of-Uniform Day

Our iso Out-Of-Uniform Day theme is Decades. We would like students to dress in the fashion of, or an icon from, the decade of their choosing. Photos will be taken during tutorial and shared on the website.

Driving the message home

On Daffodil Day we are inviting families to drive the message home by chalk colouring their driveway with messages of hope, support and remembrance. We will encourage families to post their creations on the Compass Facebook page.

Childers Hair Raising event

2020 marks the fourth year of our hair raising event. Information for this event is available in a video on the College Facebook page. Students will have to arrange for a hairdresser to cut their hair this year and arrange for it to be sent. Please note that students should contact Molly Jackway (molly.jackway@education.vic.gov.au) to get the specific instructions on how to prepare the hair.

We are still investigating a means of holding our most coveted event, the Annual Spaghetti Eating Competition. We hope that we can put something together in this space.

Congratulations to all Logans students on how they have settled into remote learning 2.0. Many students have said they are enjoying being at home again, or even finding it easier this time around. Regardless of how you have returned to remote learning, the feedback has been positive on your efforts, so well done! It is a difficult time for our year 12’s in their last year, but we acknowledge it is difficult for all of our students to be away from their friends at this time. So we encourage all students to check in on a mate and to find some time to do things they enjoy. We are lucky in Warrnambool that we can still get out and about to exercise.

The Student Leadership team still meet every Monday to talk about what they can do to build house connection while in remote learning. This week they organised a kahoot for all students to complete. With each tute group competing against each other. This is continuing our theme of Fun Fridays. Prior to going remote each Friday the year 12’s were going into tutes and running an activity with the younger year levels. This was to help build interaction between year levels which had been identified as an area for improvement in our tutes. Next week for Friday Tute we have a breakfast cooking competition planned, students can cook breakfast on the day or share a picture of a breakfast they have made on another day, but they need to be in the picture to prove they prepared it. Points will be awarded and combined for a tute total. More information will be provided in tutes next week.

At this time of the year we would normally be promoting Foodshare Week, raising money and collecting food sources. If you are able to support this amazing charity at this time we encourage you to do so. You can find details on their Facebook page as well as the Warrnambool College page.

What a crazy time it’s been! Despite everything that is going on at the moment, the staff and students of Hopkins House have been working together, achieving amazing things and giving us much to celebrate in these uncertain times.

On the 31st of July Hopkins had their annual out of uniform day. Although we didn’t know it at the time, this was the last opportunity to come together in person before moving back to our remote learning space. Thanks to everyone who showed their support on and in the lead up to the event.

We had so many people generously donate food and drink items to sell, none more so than Jane Dough Bakery who donated 120 doughnuts. These were an absolute hit and sold out extremely quickly. The op shop theme was well received, with many people getting right behind the cause, donating their gold coins and pulling out all the stops with their outfits. The atmosphere on the day was amazing, Hopkins Alumni Flynn Gurry returned to his old stomping ground to play some live music for us, this really set the tone (no pun intended) for the day. Thanks Flynn!

Even in these remote times, Hopkins are finding ways to stay connected, our fortnightly assemblies have continued online. It was amazing to ‘see everyone’ this morning, even if it was only through a screen. Keep checking in, support and look after each other. Whilst the environment is challenging in so many respects’ it’s important that we take the time to celebrate the ‘good stuff’.

So, we find ourselves in Remote Learning 2.0. Some students have managed to slide back into the practices and routines they set up last remote learning period, some are finding it a lot more difficult to motivate themselves the second time round. It is important to remember that we are all in this together and that there is always someone to reach out to for support. Please don’t hesitate to contact your tute teacher or one of the Merri House leadership staff if you have any questions or need support in any way.

To keep the Merri tutes engaged and connected we are still running our famous inter-tute competition every Wednesday morning in tute. This week M4 came out on top, very closely followed by M2 and then M6. See the current leader board.

In addition to this, the Merri Student Leaders are currently in the process of designing a competition for all Merri students to get involved in over this lockdown/remote learning period. This will involve students earning points for the unique and interesting lockdown projects and activities they get involved in. For example, artwork, building projects, exercise achievements, completing puzzles etc. Keep your eye open for an email and information about this in tute.

Merits are still being awarded to students who demonstrate the school values of persistence, resilience and mutual respect in the remote learning setting. We have some incredible Merri students who are excelling in this area. Four Merri students have managed to receive over 100 merits!

Persistence, resilience and mutual respect are all very important and relevant values to be demonstrating during this challenging time. Continue doing your best, seeking support if you need it and looking out for friends and family members you might need a virtual hug.
