Wollongong Diocesan Sport Trial

Recently, several talented students from the Junior School have trialled for 2021 Sporting Teams in the Wollongong Diocese. These trials were for Cricket, Tennis and Basketball. All students that represented the College at these trials were commended on their efforts by the selectors. It is exciting to announce that Leo Valdmanis was successful in being selected in the Wollongong Diocese Basketball Team. He competed against 28 talented students from other schools in the Wollongong Diocese. We look forward to Leo representing the Diocese and our College at the NSW MacKillop Trials next year. Congratulations Leo!!

SGC Junior AFL team were looking to finish the year with a win. Unfortunately, the win did not happen but it was another close game. We made too many errors and St Peter’s capitalised by turning them into points. Special mention to Sabah Paki and Ivy Smith who worked hard in all facets of the game.

Congratulations to the members of the Junior AFL Team on their sportsmanship and respect towards both the officials and their opponents. I hope to see you all trial again for AFL in 2021.

Newcomb Ball

St Greg’s Drew with St Peter’s

This week our Newcomb Ball team were eager to hit the court against St Peter’s. In the opening set we began strongly, however, after several dropped balls, St Peter’s fought back to take the first set 25-21.

Throughout the second set, we remained in the lead after some impressive and powerful serving by Luca McDonald, Charlize Anastasio and Nicola Blyton as well as some skilful catching by David Jackson. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, the third set could not be played and the game resulted in a draw. We have enjoyed several “Friendly Games” throughout the season and look forward to playing again in 2021.

Junior Netball

This week we met St Peter’s in our final friendly game for the term. The mid-court game was closely contested, many turnovers were made by Ruby Isbister, Ivy Quig and Taya Bowen. Ava Langham returned to the team after injury, making a great debut in the final round.

Trailing 4 - 3 in the third quarter, the St Greg’s shooting combination of Lucy Stewart and Taya Bowen made a strong comeback to finish the game 7-4. Congratulations on a fantastic mini-season to the girls, and I look forward to seeing your talent develop in 2021.

Junior Boys Soccer

St Greg’s 3 Drew St Peter’s 3

What an astounding game! St Greg’s started off the game strongly scoring two goals, both goals scored by Mitchel Harding, putting us in the lead heading into the 2nd half. Zane Mallinson scored another goal in the second half. It was a good game ending in a draw.

Congratulations to the boys for the great game.. You have all come so far this year and should be so proud of your achievements. It has been a pleasure to coach these amazing young boys, who have always been respectful and determined to give their best. It has been great to watch them grow and come together as a team.

St Greg’s 29 def St Peter’s 21

Before the game, the Senior AFL Team were focused and determined to win. St Greg’s had a slow first quarter and were 13 points behind. The team regrouped, and with a great team performance won the game. Special mention to Kye Penfold, Cameron Newell, Ben Dean and Ashton Tsagalas who took some valuable intercept marks.

Congratulations to the Senior AFL Team on working together as a unit. You should be proud of what the team achieved this term. Thank you for your commitment and persistence during our training sessions and games.

Volleyball

St Peter’s def St Greg’s

This week our Senior Volleyball Team were enthusiastic and raring to go. After having only one opportunity to play a “Friendly Match” throughout this unusual season, they were keen to get the win against St Peter’s.

Throughout both the first and second sets we gelled together well delivering some classy action in both attack and defence. The lead continually changed back and forth until the very end but unfortunately, we lost to a better side on the day.

I would like to thank the team for their commitment, effort and sportsmanship shown during the season. It was a pleasure coaching you!

Senior Boys Soccer

St Greg’s 7 def St Peter’s 1

This was the 2nd and last game for the IPSSO season and another emphatic win for the Senior Boys Soccer Team. The 7-1 result was a fine achievement on the back of their 13-0 win against the same St Peter’s team in Week 2. As a result of the first game, we offered to make the game more competitive by allowing St Peter’s to play all 14 players and their coach against our 11 boys. The result highlighted the quality of the St Greg’s team and their willingness to show respect to the opposition.

Great credit goes to the St Greg’s leadership team of Massimo Murdocca and Max Anastasio who guided the team extremely confidently through each weekly training session and both games. They were fair and thoughtful in leading the other boys and appreciated the responsibility placed upon them.

I wish the Year 6 boys further success and enjoyment in future sporting adventures and thank them for their service to the team.

Senior Netball

St Greg’s 19 def St Peter’s 13

The Senior Netball team walked away winners again. It was obvious that all players had improved from the way they positioned themselves on the court. The calling for the ball and passing was much crisper. Our defence moved the ball well down the court and was rewarded with some nice goals. Well done to all players! A big thank you to Tessa for being our cheer squad and scorekeeper!
