Term 2

We've quickly settled back into our routines and working well.

Readers 

We have some phenomenal students who have not missed a school night of reading since the beginning of the year! Congratulations to those students who are committed to reading. As students get older it can be a little more difficult to encourage nightly reading, however research really shows how beneficial reading at home is for your child. 

English

Reading - We've just completed our fist text for this term "Uncle XBox" by Jared Thomas. Students enjoyed the journey of Dusty who was unexpectedly separated from his XBox and found meaning in life through surfing, social and cultural connectedness.

Writing - During writing time we've been learning how to create factual recounts. In this time, we've explored some of the things that happened during first contact when Captain Cook landed on Australia. We've learnt that during factual recount writing it is essential to keep things chronologically in order and stick to the facts that we have discovered in our research. Something that the students really resonated with was how the Indigenous Australians would have been feeling. They were fascinated to hear from Indigenous recounts that they believed that Captain Cook's crew were ghosts of their ancestors. 

Spelling - We continue to work our way through Spellex and we've learnt some interesting spelling handy hints with the spelling of our latest tricky words. We identified that the 'ur' spelling in surprised can be quite tricky and by using the hook 'U R surprised' has really helped us. Our other tricky word tomorrow can be confusing with which letters to double, so our hook song 'Tom or row' has been a game changer.

This week we have learnt about Free and Bound Bases. A free base word is a word that you can add a suffix and prefix to however it is still a word without these additions. For example colour we can add dis-colour-ed. A bound base is word that requires a prefix or a suffix for it to become a word we know. For example 'ject'; is a Latin term for 'push', it needs a suffix or prefix to create a word, such as in-ject.

Mathematics

Fractions and Decimals

We started the term revisiting fractions and decimals and it was sensational to see so many students remember from last year what a numerator and denominator were. We practised identifying and writing fractions into the tenths and hundredths.  

Perimeter and Area

We are just about to wrap up our unit learning about perimeter and area. We've had lots of fun measuring classroom objects and making comparisons. Something we are trying to get our heads around is the idea that an object might have a large perimeter, however it might have a very small area.

Religion

We've commenced our unit on The Circle of Life which looks at how we navigate grief and loss. Although it is a natural cycle of life, it's a tough topic but we do our best to talk of happy memories and things that make us smile when we think of those who have passed. Last week we thought of ways in which we can support our friends when they go through loss and it's lovely to see we have quite the community of support in our classroom.

Camp

We have our Year 3/4 Camp coming up next month on the 9th-10th of June at Alexandra Adventure Resort. Permission/medical notes and packing lists have gone home. Please have them returned ASAP so we cab finalise information for the camp.

Students have had a little peek at the website and are really excited! We'll have more information sessions with the students to answer the questions. Stay tuned.

ANZAC Day

Thank you to the families who took the time to send in photographs of their family members who have served. We spent time in class learning about ways in which people and animals serve in times of conflict. Students are always keen to learn of each other's family stories and it was heartening to see it done in such a respectful way. 

Discovery Day

What a fun day we had at Euroa Secondary College! Year 4 participated in PE, English, Technology and Science just like big high schoolers. We are already looking forward to the next discovery day.

Mothers Day

What a turn out! It was fantastic to see so many mums and special people come to our pampering session. We hope you had a wonderful day.

AFL Visit - Melbourne Football Club

Last Thursday we had a wonderful time meeting the players from the Melbourne Football Club. This was possibly one of the most engaging visits we've had in a long time. The players entertained us with an in-depth Q and A session followed up with some fun games together.
