Year 6
Welcome to our Grade 6 Classroom Communication for Term 2, Week 5!

English
In English we have been writing a factual recount about the 1967 referendum. Our class is reading the book Us Mob Walawurru- a book about a young Indigenous girl and what life was like many years ago on a cattle station. Our spelling focuses are the prefixes pro, syn, sym, con and co and we have done many learning activities around these. We also wrote our own fables with a moral.
Maths
In maths we have being doing time calculations from start to finish including 24-hour timetables and how to read the clock from am to pm. We have also been learning about ordering and comparing fractions either on a chart or number line. We have been multiplying and dividing fractions to find equivalent fractions and to simplify fractions.
Science
We are learning about habitats and how humans and animals can affect the ecosystem, and the difference between man-made and natural environments. We were very surprised to see our very own town of Euroa getting mentioned during one of our lessons. See below!
Religious Education
In RE the topics we are learning about are The Risen Christ which includes the stories of The Road to Emmaus, Mary Magdalene and Peter. Peter is one of Jesus’ disciples. Mary Magdalene was one of the three women that went to visit Jesus after he died. We have just begun our new topic about the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Inquiry
Year 6 has been learning about how Australia became a federation on the 1st of January 1901. We are also learning about government and past Prime Ministers such as Sir Edmund Barton, Julia Gillard and Kevin Rudd.
ANZAC Day
To mark this special day Grade 6 students participated in ANZAC Day ceremonies at St. John’s and then at Euroa Secondary College. Some students read some special readings and some layed wreaths. Then on ANZAC Day some students represented our school at the official services at Euroa and Violet Town, by laying wreaths.
Good Start Visits
Last week Mr Kerlin took 10 Grade 6 students to Goodstart Early Learning Euroa. We read stories to some children and did some activities with them, and we all had a great time with them. We are really looking forward to our next visit! We will also visit Euroa Kindergarten.
Specialist Timetable
PE and Art are on a Tuesday this term, and Japanese and STEM are on a Wednesday.
Mother's Day
At school there was a Mother Day stall where we had the opportunity to select a gift for our mums and special people in our lives. There were lots of fantastic options to choose from making it a difficult decision. Then we had a Mother’s Day liturgy when some students read some prayers and many mother and special friends attended. Next the special friends had a beautiful afternoon tea. With full tummies, it was time for the afternoon pampering. Each class had different activities such as massage, nail painting, mindful colouring, bracelet making, and yoga. It was very fun and a great afternoon.
Stand Up Project
Last week a group of 10 Year 6 students went to the Euroa Primary School to take part in a workshop called The Stand Up Project. We were joined by some children from Euroa Primary and we were lead by Zac from the Stand Up Project. We learnt about what bullying is and some steps and strategies we can use and teach others when bullying is occurring and if you are a bystander to bullying what can we do. We are going to teach some other year levels about bullying and telling them of the importance of not being a follower, but to stand up and say no this is not OK. We all worked hard and had a great day!
ESC Experience Day
We walked to the high school and started off with Performing Arts where we played games related to drama. Then we headed to the stadium for PE and played basketball. After that we had lunch which was sausages and cordial. Next, we headed to the science lab where we dissected flowers into their parts such as petal, stem, pistil and ovary. We finished off with Humanities where we learnt about shields, and we designed our own which could include countries or activities that are special to our families
Cross Country
Year 6 participated in cross country with the Euroa Primary School. This year for a change we ran a new track at the Euroa football oval and surrounds. The distance was three kilometres, and the top three competitors went to Murchison for the district level where we achieved some great results and we wish those that made it through all the best in Yea next week.
Rights, Resilience and Respectful Relationships (RRRR)
In RRRR we have been learning about positive coping strategies to help keep calm when things may get difficult. Some coping strategies that our class like to do are, going for a walk, listening to music, doing a distracting activity like sport, drawing and reading. We have just started a new topic where we will learn about problem solving.
Melbourne Demons AFLW Visit
On Thursday last week we were lucky enough to have the Melbourne Demons AFLW team visit St. Johns, and even more special was that one of our former students, Georgia Gall, who now plays for Melbourne, was a part of the visit!
We took part in a question and answer session and then some fun footy games out on the oval!
Let's Find Our Voice
Our students have had a wonderful start to the Let’s Find Our Voice program, with their first visit already taking place on the 14th of May. The students who joined the choir had a fantastic time singing together and building confidence!
This special community choir brings together students from local primary schools and FCJ College, along with community members, to share the joy of music and performance.
The program coordinators, Catherine Burton and Adam Toms, will continue working with our students during upcoming school visits on:

As part of their involvement, students will also take part in a special concert:
- Let’s Find Our Voice Concert📍 FCJ College Marie Madeleine Centre📅 Tuesday 10th June 2026
At the concert, students will perform two songs as part of this exciting community event.
We are very proud of our students for their enthusiasm and look forward to seeing their continued growth in the program!

A quick word from Mr. Tunks
Welcome to Week 5 of Term 2 everyone it seems like we are absolutely flying through the term! The students have been hard at work in all areas and are in a really good learning routine at the moment. I will be on leave from Week 7 until Week 10 of this term as my wife is due to give birth on the 7th of June very exciting times!
Just a few reminders of our expectations in Year 6
-Students to have their own drink bottles and hats at school
-Students to read and have their reader signed nightly and checked by the teacher before school each morning
-Students to practice their spelling words nightly and checked by the teacher before school each morning.
