Bike + Scooter Licenses:

As with any new policies and procedures, there are often a few little wrinkles to be discovered and ironed out once they have been trialed.
Our key consideration has always been safety first and foremost, and the new license system has been exceptionally effective at improving safety for riders and for parents, grandparents, and children walking in and around our school.
The only two changes to the policy are:
- Removing the distance-you-live-from-school rule.
- Making it clear that children in years 1 to 4 can ride a scooter or bike to school, provided they are accompanied by a parent all the way, and provided the parent takes the scooter or bike home during the day. Taking the scooter/bike home is an interim measure until we can come up with a better plan.
Space is at an absolute premium in our school, and our year five and six students have a great many large electric scooters, bikes, and push scooters that we need to store safely.
Because of this, we simply do not have space to accommodate scooters and bicycles for students in years 1 to 4.
A reminder as to what is required within our Bike and Scooter License process:
To ensure the safety of all students, staff, and visitors, riding a bicycle or scooter to and from school is a privilege that requires an approved permit.
Due to safety concerns, traffic volume during drop-off/pick-up times, and space constraints, specific guidelines must be followed.
Policy and Eligibility Guidelines Age and Year Level Requirements:
In line with NZ Police and Waka Kotahi (NZTA) safety recommendations, independent riding permits are only available to students in Year 5 and Year 6.
Helmets:
Approved safety helmets are mandatory for all riders. Helmets must be worn and correctly fastened whenever riding to and from school.
School Grounds Policy:
All riders must dismount and walk their bike/scooter as soon as they reach the school gates and anywhere inside the school grounds, including walkways, courts, and parking areas.
Carpark, Drop-Zone and Turning Bays:
Riding through carparks, pickup bays, or driveway zones is strictly prohibited.
Bike Rack Behaviour:
The bike storage area is strictly a "park and leave" zone. Loitering, rough play, or inappropriate behaviour near the bike racks will result in permit revocation.
Student and Parent/Caregiver Agreement:
I/We have read the school Bike and Scooter Policy and agree to abide by all rules.
I understand that failing to follow safety rules, riding without a helmet, riding on school grounds, or causing disruptions at the bike racks will result in the immediate suspension or loss of riding privileges.
Helmet Agreement:
I promise to wear a properly fitted helmet every time I ride.
Grounds Agreement:
I promise to walk my bike/scooter the moment I step onto school grounds.
Behaviour Agreement:
I promise to treat others respectfully at the bike racks and follow safe road rules.
Parent/Caregiver Agreement:
I acknowledge that as a parent/guardian, I am responsible for my child’s safety and riding conduct on their journey to and from school.
Disclaimer:
While we provide a designated storage area, bikes and scooters are brought to school at your own risk. The school is not responsible for any damage, loss, or theft that may occur. All equipment is brought to school entirely at the owner's risk.
