Pre-Senior School | Real-World Experience

One of the key aims of our Challenging Me Program in the Pre Senior School is to provide students with authentic, real-world experiences that help prepare them for life both during and beyond their school years. Throughout the year, students have explored their individual strengths, skills, and passions. Understanding who they are, what motivates them, and where their talents lie is a vital life skill that supports not only future employment, but also personal wellbeing, decision-making, confidence, and success in a range of future pursuits.

As part of our Challenge Days, students recently took part in a ‘Getting Your First Job’ experience. This immersive program guides students through every step of the job application process, providing valuable insight into workplace expectations and helping them develop skills that will support a wide range of future pathways.

During the day, students worked on creating professional resumes and cover letters, learning how to effectively communicate their strengths, experiences, and personal qualities. They then prepared for the next stage of the process: the job interview.

The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the series of mock job interviews, where every student had the opportunity to experience a formal interview setting. Members of the School Executive and senior staff generously volunteered their time, stepping into the role of local business owners and conducting interviews with students. This authentic experience challenged students to think on their feet, communicate confidently, and present themselves professionally.

Many students reflected on how challenging the process was, particularly the prospect of speaking with unfamiliar adults in a high-pressure setting. However, it was this very challenge that made the experience so valuable. By stepping outside their comfort zones, students developed greater confidence, resilience, and self-awareness, while strengthening communication and interpersonal skills that will serve them well in many aspects of life.

Experiences such as these are central to the philosophy of the Challenging Me Program. While academic learning remains important, we believe it is equally vital to equip students with the practical skills and capabilities they will need in the future. As part of a broader journey of personal growth, students are encouraged to develop self-awareness, adaptability, and the confidence to embrace new opportunities.

Whether pursuing further study, entering the workforce, or exploring future career pathways, our students are building the skills, character, and judgement needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Through programs like this, we continue to prepare students not just for school, but for life beyond it.
