25 Years of the Brownlow Breakfast
For more than two decades, the Brownlow Breakfast has been one of Peninsula Grammar’s most cherished community events, bringing together students, families, alumni, football enthusiasts and some of the biggest names in Australian football. What began in 1999 as a fundraising initiative of the Peninsula School Parents Association (PSPA) has grown into an enduring tradition and a significant part of the School’s sporting and community history.
The inaugural Brownlow Breakfast was held on 20 September 1999 in the Ansett Hall. Hosted by Peninsula Grammar alumnus Peter Mitchell (Class of 1977), the event quickly established a winning combination of football, entertainment and community spirit.
Peter became synonymous with the Brownlow Breakfast, serving as Master of Ceremonies from 1999 to 2019. The first panel featured AFL umpire and Peninsula Grammar alumnus John Russo (Class of 1972), former St Kilda player Nathan Burke and comedian Andrew Startin.
The event has also enjoyed the steadfast support of the Lamattina family since its inception. Their generosity and long-standing commitment have helped underpin the Brownlow Breakfast’s growth and success, making them an integral part of its story.
From its earliest years, the Brownlow Breakfast became much more than a football event. It provided an opportunity for the Peninsula Grammar community to come together, hear from some of the game’s most recognisable personalities and support the School through fundraising.
Throughout the early 2000s, the Brownlow Breakfast welcomed a succession of AFL identities, including Danny Frawley, Nathan Burke, Tommy Hafey, Ron Barassi, Nathan Buckley, Peter Hudson, Simon Madden and Matthew Richardson. Entertainers such as Greg Champion, Mike Brady and Andrew Startin became familiar faces, adding humour and entertainment to the morning.
The event also celebrated the achievements of Peninsula Grammar alumni who progressed to the highest levels of Australian football. Stewart Loewe (Class of 1985) and David Hille (Class of 1999) were among those who returned to share their experiences of playing at AFL level, reinforcing the strong connection between the School and its sporting alumni.
Over the years, the Brownlow Breakfast continued to attract an extraordinary list of guests, including Mark Ricciuto, Bob Skilton, Shane Crawford, Adam Cooney, Nick Maxwell, Dyson Heppell and Campbell Brown. The event also reflected the changing landscape of Australian football, with women increasingly represented among its guests, including Kirsty Lamb and Abbey Holmes.
A significant milestone came in 2019 when the Brownlow Breakfast celebrated its 21st birthday. Peter Mitchell returned as co-host alongside Peninsula Grammar alumna and journalist Lauren Wood (Class of 2006). The panel featured Claudia Whitfort (Class of 2017), Nathan Jones (Class of 2005), David Parkin OAM and Carlton captain Patrick Cripps. Nathan Jones’ involvement highlighted the continuing connection between the School and its successful football alumni.
In recent years, the event has continued to evolve while retaining its original spirit. Robert DiPierdomenico, Abbey Holmes and Dylan Buckley have taken on hosting duties, while guests have included David Zaharakis, Liam Baker, Sam Docherty, Trent Cotchin, Kate McCarthy and Zach Merrett.
Today, the Brownlow Breakfast is far more than a celebration of Australian football. It is a celebration of community, sporting achievement and the enduring relationship between Peninsula Grammar and its alumni. For more than 25 years, it has brought generations of students, families, staff and alumni together to share in the excitement of the football season.
From Peter Mitchell’s remarkable 20-year association with the event to the growing number of alumni who have returned as guests, hosts and panellists, the Brownlow Breakfast remains an important part of the School’s living history and a tradition that continues to bring the Peninsula Grammar community together each year.
