Dear Parents and Students,
I would like to start off this newsletter by thanking all of our students and staff for their efforts in making Term 3 a really positive and engaging 10 weeks at JMSS. Although the flu season seemed to be longer and more impactful than previous years it hasn’t stopped the diverse range of events and activities that characterise Term 3. A remarkable list of student achievements in chess, debating, athletics, competitions and team sports are highlighted later in this newsletter. Of particular note was the annual Lip-sync house competition that saw staff and students combine to create original and entertaining performances that received much positive acclaim and the Spring Soiree that again showcased the amazing musical talent here at the school.

The 2027 Reef and Rainforest Trip
We are about to launch the 2027 Reef and Rainforest Trip for our current year 10 students and we have made some changes about how student selection for this trip occurs. This trip has been running annually since 2014 and unfortunately, we can only take a maximum of 80 students due to restrictions on visitor numbers at locations such as the Daintree Rainforest. We are asking students who wish to go on this trip to put in an expression of interest with their parents’ consent by the end of week 1 of term 4. A bulletin will go out on Friday 18th September on Compass to year 11 parents with an itinerary for the trip, approximate costings as well as a link to a google form that will allow an expression of interest to be made. 2027 School Captains
I am very pleased to announce that the following 4 students have been selected as the JMSS school captains for 2027 after an extensive selection process.
Congratulations to Amelia Bate, Advik Palta, Alisa Krivulin and Jake Nuttall who I’m sure will represent the student body with distinction.

Trial exams
Week 2 of the holidays sees all students completing a Year 12 subject at JMSS in 2026 complete trial exams. The main purpose of these exams is to get experience sitting exams that cover the entire year’s content, rehearse preparation techniques and get feedback on technical aspects of exam performance. Studies estimate that at least 25 percent of performance in exams can be attributed to effective preparation strategies and so treating these exams with due seriousness is essential to performing at your best at the end of the year.
The term finished on a high with a free dress day to raise money for State Schools Relief with the theme “dress as your favorite teacher”. A lot of very colourful shirts and temporary baldness on display. Our current school captains dressed as their favorite teacher are shown in the photo below:
I do hope that all of our students get a chance to rest and recharge their batteries over the break in preparation for the challenges of Term 4.
