Years 5 & 6

Grade 5/6 – Term 4 Overview

Welcome to Term 4! We are looking forward to a busy and exciting final term filled with learning, collaboration and celebrations. Our Discovery unit, World Challenges, will explore how Australia connects with the world and how we can respond to global challenges. We will also support our Year 6 students as they prepare for their transition to secondary school and celebrate their primary school journey.

Mathematics

This term, students will strengthen their mathematical understanding through targeted group work, practical investigations and problem-solving activities.

Throughout the term, students will focus on:

  • estimating, measuring and constructing angles, and exploring relationships between angles
  • consolidating place value and using the four operations to solve problems
  • identifying patterns and using rules to describe how they grow
  • measuring mass and capacity, choosing appropriate metric units and converting between units
  • collecting, representing and interpreting data connected to our Discovery investigations.

Students will apply their skills to practical planning projects involving costs, budgets, routes and timetables.

Literacy

Our literacy learning will connect closely with our exploration of global citizenship and sustainability.

In Reading, students will investigate nonfiction texts, including articles, maps, graphs and country profiles. They will practise identifying main ideas, summarising important information, asking thoughtful questions and comparing different perspectives. Students will also consider the reliability of sources and use evidence to explain their understanding. Independent reading and our weekly library sessions will continue to encourage reading for pleasure and discussion.

In Writing, students will create explanation texts that clearly communicate how and why things happen. They will develop their use of technical vocabulary, cause-and-effect language and supporting details. Later in the term, students will write to promote action and change, considering how to communicate effectively with a particular audience.

Discovery – Global Citizens for a Sustainable Future

Our discovery question is: How should we respond to global geographical challenges?

Students will build their geographical knowledge through mapping, research, data investigations and hands-on design activities. They will consider the environmental, social and economic impacts of their ideas and how people can contribute to positive change.

Year 6 Graduation Preparations

Preparations for Year 6 Graduation are underway! Students have begun creating their Year 6 Video Reflections and rehearsing their Year 6 Dance as we prepare to celebrate this special milestone.

A reminder for Year 6 families: if you have not already done so, please help your child collect 5–10 photos from birth to the present for their collage of memories, showing their journey from babies to almost secondary school students. Photos can be supplied as digital files or hard copies. Thank you for helping us celebrate their growth and memories!
