Years 1 & 2

Grade 1/2 Term 4 Update

Welcome to Term 4 in Grade 1/2!

Welcome back! We hope everyone enjoyed a wonderful break and is feeling refreshed and ready for an exciting Term 4. We have lots of engaging learning experiences ahead as students continue to build their skills, explore new ideas and celebrate their growth across English, Chinese, Mathematics and Discovery.

In Mathematics, students will become problem-solving superstars as they explore fractions, measurement, shapes and money through practical, hands-on activities. They will compare length, mass and capacity, investigate halves, quarters and eighths, and solve sharing, grouping, multiplication and division problems. We will also strengthen number fluency by practising addition and subtraction facts, as well as multiplication facts for twos and related division facts.

In Literacy, students will dive into imaginative, informative and persuasive texts, developing their reading comprehension, vocabulary and confidence as readers and writers. They will create recounts, informative texts and persuasive pieces, learning to organise their ideas, write for different audiences and communicate their opinions clearly. Our phonics and spelling learning will continue to build students’ confidence with more complex spelling patterns, longer words, silent letters and sentence writing. In Chinese, students will develop their narrative writing, make predictions when reading, and explore Chinese characters, radicals and stroke order as they strengthen their language skills.

Our Discovery learning will focus on Global Futures - Earth Care!

Students will investigate the places that are important to us, explore natural and constructed features, and consider how environments change through natural processes and human activity. Using maps, photographs, texts and observations of our own school environment, students will investigate waste and discover practical ways to reduce rubbish, conserve resources and care for the Earth. This learning will take place across both English and Chinese, giving students opportunities to develop environmental vocabulary in both languages, share their ideas and consider local and First Nations perspectives on caring for Country. We are excited to see our students become thoughtful environmental citizens who recognise that even small actions can make a big difference!

Home learning and reading

We encourage families to continue supporting learning at home through regular reading and the activities provided by classroom teachers. Students are expected to read for at least 20 minutes each evening in English or Chinese and record their reading in their diary daily. Students can also access a range of engaging online resources, including Epic, My Literacy, My Spelling, My Numeracy, Sunset Maths, Jetpack Algebra, Nessy and Seesaw. These resources provide opportunities to practise skills, build confidence and make learning fun.

Sun safety

As the weather warms up, we look forward to enjoying outdoor learning and activities. Please remember that hats are compulsory whenever students are outdoors during Term 4. Students should bring a broad-brimmed or bucket hat to school every day. Students without a hat will need to remain in a shaded area during outdoor play and activities.

We look forward to a fantastic final term filled with curiosity, creativity, collaboration and celebration. Thank you for your continued support as we work together to help every Grade 1/2 student finish the year feeling confident, capable and proud of their learning!
