Educators’ Visit on Monday
We were delighted to showcase FWPS on Monday with approximately 35 educators from our network of schools visiting to observe our Explicit Maths Program being taught in classrooms. Senior Education Improvement Leader, Karen Harris, was extremely impressed and complimentary of the work that my principal team colleagues, Liz and Carolyn and our classroom teachers have done in implementing the program across our whole school. I will add my appreciation to our students who we can confidently predict will demonstrate our school values when called upon.
Staff Injury
Thoughts are with Towela Sinkonde, a senior member of leadership, who badly injured her knee playing with her regular basketball team last week. She is unfortunately in no fit state to return to school at the moment and I am sure you will join me in wishing her well in what may be a slow recovery.
Emergency Management Drill
As communicated via a Compass post earlier this week, we will be holding an Emergency Management evacuation drill tomorrow. This drill will allow students to practise evacuating to the oval from their classrooms. At the end of the drill, students will return to normal learning and activities. In the event of wet weather, this will switch to a shelter in place drill.
During this time, please refrain from calling or attending the school office, as our administration staff will also be involved in this drill and the buildings will be locked.
Please ensure your child arrives at school on time, as you may be locked out of the office from 9:10am until 9:40am. Any parents / carers onsite at 9:10am will be required to evacuate to the oval as part of the drill.
If you are nearby, you may hear the siren for up to four minutes. We will also be reminding students of the drill in the morning before it happens.
Interschool Sports Grand Final
The Footscray Primary School's Sports District Winter Competition Grand Finals will be played tomorrow. Our Girls’ netball and AFL football teams have qualified and will participate at school.
All Finals will be played at Footscray West PS and adjoining ovals.
Football – FWPS school oval (AFL 9s)
Soccer – Johnson Reserve
Tee ball – Johnson Reserve
Netball – Footscray West Indoor school court
Games will commence at 12.15pm, with the exception of the Girls’ Netball match which will commence at the conclusion of the Mixed Netball game.
The duration of matches is as follows:
Soccer – 20 min halves
Football – 10 min quarters
Netball – 12 minute halves
Tee ball – minimum of four innings per side
Presentations will be conducted at the conclusion of all of the finals in the Eagle Gymnasium.
Pennants for Winners and Runners Up to be handed out at the presentation.
Grand Final winners will represent FDPSS District in the Divisional Round Robin finals at Keilor Park Sports Multi sports Complex on Thursday, 25th June (competing Districts – Footscray, Yarraville, Sunshine 1, Sunshine 2).
We wish the best of luck to our Girls’ netball and footy teams. Please be aware that there will be many student and adult visitors at our school tomorrow. Adults (FWPS and other schools) will be required to sign in as visitors when they arrive.
Assembly
Tomorrow it will be 2BL’s turn for their assembly item. We will hear from our sports reporters on their final round (last week) and from our two teams competing in tomorrow’s Grand Finals shortly after they have been run.
As is our regular practice, the gates will open after recess to allow students to briefly return to class before moving to the Eagle Gymnasium at 2:40pm, ready for assembly to commence no later than 2:50pm.
Visitors are asked to be seated prior to this time.
Student Learning Conferences
Appreciations to our community for attending in person and remotely for our first Student Learning Conference afternoons this week.
The second day of our semester 1 Student Learning Conferences will be held after school next Tuesday:
Tuesday 23rd June, 3:40pm – 6:40pm
Due to Sam Jarred (3SJ) being unwell on Wednesday, her (replacement) interview day will be moved to next Wednesday. 3SJ parents and carers have already had this information communicated to them.
School Council
Our School Council next meets onsite on Tuesday evening. A report will be shared in next week’s newsletter.
Milo's Birthday Surprise - Friday, 26th June
Ever since we introduced Little Learners Love Literacy, our Prep students have celebrated learning all the letters and sounds and celebrating the occasion by dressing up as a LLLL character and bringing a delicious phoneme birthday treat to share with the class.
Senior Bake Sale
Don't forget to support our Senior Bake Sale (Years 3 to 6) next Friday. Please check the note on the PA page.
End of Term is Friday, 26th June
Friday of next week will be the final day of Term 2. School will be dismissed one hour early at 2.30pm following a 1.50pm assembly start time. Students will return to their classrooms for dismissal. School finishes early every term - one hour early in Terms 1, 2 and 3 and two hours early on the final day of the school year. Parents and carers are reminded to make arrangements to ensure that children are collected at 2.30pm on Friday. Our OSHC service, TheirCare will provide care from the earlier start time on the final day of term.
Best regards,
Brendan
