Weekly Values Focus - Respect

Week 10: Footscray West students take ownership of their actions

At our school, we show respect by taking ownership of our actions. Taking ownership means understanding that our choices belong to us. Sometimes we make great choices, and sometimes we make mistakes. We all experience big feelings like frustration, disappointment, or anger, but being respectful means remembering that we are responsible for the words we use and the actions we take, even when things feel difficult.

When we make a mistake, the first step is being honest about what happened. Instead of blaming someone else or making excuses, we can stop and think about what we did and why we did it. Taking responsibility shows courage and helps us learn from our experiences. Once we understand our actions, we can think about how they affected other people. Our choices can have an impact on our classmates, teachers, friends, and family members, so it is important to consider how others might feel.

Taking ownership also means finding ways to make things right. Sometimes this might be a sincere apology. Other times it could mean helping to fix a problem, cleaning up a mess, repairing damage, or doing something positive to support the person who was affected. We do these things because we care about others and want to rebuild trust and respect.

This week, think about the choices you make each day. If something doesn't go the way you hoped, can you be honest about your part in it? Can you learn from it and make a plan for next time? Taking ownership of our actions is not always easy, but it helps us grow, learn, and show respect for ourselves and the people around us.
