Great Incursion for Our Eco Club!

Bella from CERES visited us to teach us all about the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS). Our students were excited to share what we've been doing with our own collection of juice boxes to raise money for the Tasmanian Devil. They proudly explained our collection system: boxes in every classroom, a central collection bin, and a dedicated team that collects the boxes on lunch order days.

The system is already making a difference. Graham has noticed there are far fewer juice boxes in the school yard, which is fantastic!

Bella also shared some fascinating facts about recycling. One of the key aims of the CDS is to reduce litter, and since the scheme began, beach litter has reportedly halved. She explained that aluminium cans can be recycled infinitely, while plastic can only be recycled a limited number of times. We also learned that plastic is made from oil, a fossil fuel, and extracting and manufacturing it requires energy and creates pollution.

What impressed me most was how engaged our students were. They were so interested, asked great questions and were really passionate about making a difference.

We never want anyone to feel judged about what they buy or what is in their lunchbox. We just want our community to have the information they need to make informed choices and to start seeing waste as a resource instead of rubbish.

And what better way to think about waste as a resource than getting 10 cents back for it?

It's not just an idea, it's actual money in your hand, while helping reduce litter and supporting a good cause at the same time.
