Physical Education in Term 3
Foundation – Grade 2 Students
This term in PE the Foundation – Grade 2 students will continue to practise different fundamental movements skills beginning with basketball dribbling. Students will be challenged to dribble using both their left and right hand to help improve coordination on their non-dominant side. We will also be practising passing, catching and shooting using the basketballs, these skills are transferable and are used in other sports involving large balls.
The Foundation – Grade 2 students will also be using elastics as a warm up activity. When using elastics students are challenged to perform a series of jumps over an elastic band at ever increasing heights. Students work in groups and take it in terms to say a rhythm while performing the movement sequence. Elastics are a great way to help develop children's gross motor skills.
Grade 3&4 Students
The grade 3/4 students will be participating in soccer drills to build up their dribbling, passing and shooting skills. Students will play minor games to test their skills in game scenarios as well as learn strategies and rules.
Grade 5 Students
The students will be focusing on ultimate frisbee. Students are practising their frisbee throwing and catching skills and are beginning to learn some of the rules of the game. Ultimate frisbee is self-officiated, meaning the players are responsible for keeping the game fair and respectful. As students gain more understanding of the rules and improve their skills they will have the opportunity to run their own matches.
Grade 6 Students
Students are focussing on the sport of lacrosse which will challenge many students to use their skills and knowledge from other sports and apply them in a new way. Students will start by practising their throwing and catching skills using the lacrosse sticks and play mini games to learn the basic rules and practise the skills in game situations. Students will progress to playing matches using modified rules.
Sports Report
At the start of this term all grade 4-6 students have had the opportunity to participate in High Jump Trials. These trials took place over recess and lunch and were part of the School House Athletics Event, with each competitor who jumped scoring points for their House. These were the final trials to determine the District Athletics Team with the winners from these trials and our House Athletics event progressing through to the District Carnival which will be held on Wednesday the 26th of August at Coburg Harriers Track.
Grade 5 Alternative Sport
We are excited to announce that Yarra Hockey Club will be running a four-week hockey clinic with our Grade 5 students as part of their alternative sports program this term. Yarra Hockey Club visited the school earlier this year and worked with our Grade 1 – 4 students running hockey clinics during PE lessons – the Grade 5s voted hockey as one of the top three sporting preferences for their program. The alternative sports sessions are run on Friday afternoons with classes participating in 50-minute lessons run by expert coaches from the club.
