Green Team Enjoys a Spring Day in Brendan’s Garden
It had been a few weeks since our last Green Team meeting due to a school closure day, an ISEA iCARE workshop that Mrs Coggin attended, and the Senior School Sports. So, the students were very excited to get back into Brendan’s Garden and enjoy some time outdoors in the beautiful spring sunshine.
There were lots of changes in the garden for the students to discover. The fruit trees were covered in beautiful pink and white blossoms, while the blue iris flowers planted by our current Year 2 students when they were in Foundation were putting on a wonderful display. Many other bulbs were also in flower, adding plenty of colour to the garden.
The most exciting news for the Green Team was that the pumpkins were finally ready to eat! Each team member was able to take home a piece of pumpkin to enjoy. This led to a lively discussion about whether students liked pumpkin and their favourite ways to cook and eat it. Of the students surveyed, 24 said they liked pumpkin, while 7 said they didn't. Pumpkin soup was the most popular choice, with roasted pumpkin and pumpkin pie also receiving some votes.
The students were also excited to see how well the vegetables in the garden had grown. We admired the broccoli, broad beans, snow peas, Brussels sprouts, kale and garlic, all of which have been growing amazingly well. We discussed which other vegetables we would like to plant in Term 4 before finishing our session with some much-needed weeding of the garden beds.
As you can see from the photos, it was a perfect spring day to spend time together in Brendan’s Garden. It was wonderful to see the students enjoying the sunshine, learning about the garden and taking pride in everything that has been growing.
