OutLoud Poetry Slam
Our school Curriculum Day on 25 August, Nossal along with many other secondary schools across Melbourne had the incredible opportunity to show off not just their writing and composing talents, but also their outstanding emotive performing skills through the slam poetry competition of OutLoud Poetry Slam.
Hosted at The Wheeler Centre in the city, individual as well as school group contestants were able to take the stage to share, express, invoke, and question the topics and issues that they felt were most pressing and relevant to them. Poets were able to present such ideas through their own unique, creative styles of poetic writing, demonstrating their mastery and most importantly – passion for words.
This year, our amazingly talented poets and performers from Nossal were Fiona, Anoji, Ket and Neriah, who combined their efforts in a group to present a powerful, provoking piece raising the issue of idealised femininity and toxic body-image portrayals in the media, and ultimately reclaiming bodily autonomy. Individual poems were also written and movingly performed by Ket and Neriah, who were able to illustrate and examine experiences and topics that personally mattered and were significant to them.
Overall, as an audience member, OutLoud Poetry Slam 2025 was a truly engaging and fun experience. In such a supportive and encouraging environment, I immensely enjoyed the chance to be inspired by the wonderful creativity and talent of so many like-minded students!
Congratulations to all the Nossal participants, for demonstrating the power of poetry and words!
