Hello everyone,

Welcome back! We’ve had a fantastic start to Term 2 in the Auslan classroom. It’s been great to see everyone returning refreshed after the holidays. I’ve especially enjoyed watching students confidently practise the signs they’ve learned and show such enthusiasm for their learning.

SIGNS OF THE WEEK

Don’t forget to ask your child to show you some of the Auslan signs they have been learning. Over the past fortnight, we have been revising many of the signs that we have learnt to strengthen students’ confidence and recall.

Our Signs of the Week are ‘Advance, ‘Australia’, and 'Fair.’ We encourage you to practise these at home together!

IN THE CLASSROOM

Years 3 – Students will consolidate their knowledge of the Auslan alphabet and the Australian National Anthem, while focusing on learning to sign the “Happy Birthday” song.

Year 4 – Students will strengthen their understanding of descriptive sentences related to seasons and weather, while developing their knowledge of signs associated with food and drink.

Year 5 – Students will build on their understanding of Auslan signs related to hobbies and interests, with a focus on expanding their vocabulary for the classroom.

Year 6 – Students will consolidate their understanding of Auslan signs related to time, while learning vocabulary associated with sports and equipment. Students will also learn to sign the song “I Am Australian.”

Just like spoken language, Auslan has regional variations, or "dialects," that differ across Australian states.
