SciTech – Term 2
Welcome back to all our students and families! We hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable break and is ready for another exciting term of learning in SciTech. Term 2 promises to be full of curiosity, discovery and hands-on investigations as students continue to explore the world around them through science and technology.
Years 3 & 4 – Weather, Climate and Natural Disasters
This term, our Year 3 and 4 students will be investigating weather patterns and how they impact the way humans live, work and interact with the environment. Students will explore a range of natural disasters in Australia, including bushfires, floods, droughts and cyclones.
Through engaging investigations and discussions, students will:
- Develop an understanding of how and why these natural events occur
- Examine the impact of extreme weather on people, communities and the environment
- Explore ways we can prepare for natural disasters to stay safe
- Investigate possible actions humans can take to reduce the severity and impact of these events
Students will be encouraged to think critically about real-world problems and to consider how science and technology can support safer, more sustainable communities.
Years 5 & 6 – Earth and Space Sciences
Our Year 5 and 6 students will be exploring Earth and Space Sciences, with a focus on our solar system and the possibilities of life beyond Earth.
Students will begin by investigating the Moon, before expanding their understanding to include other planets and celestial objects within our solar system. Throughout the unit, students will:
- Explore the characteristics of planets and their position in the solar system
- Investigate the conditions required for life as we know it on Earth
- Consider whether these conditions could exist on other planets
- Examine current and emerging technologies that support space exploration
As a culminating challenge, students will apply their knowledge to design a livable environment on another planet, considering the scientific and technological requirements needed to support human life.
Throughout the term, all students will continue to develop their skills in questioning, investigating, problem-solving and communicating their ideas, while demonstrating our school values of Respect, Collaboration and Perseverance.
We look forward to an engaging and inspiring term of SciTech learning!
