Stage 1

Welcome back to Term 3! We hope everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break. Our students have returned ready for another busy and exciting term of learning, and it has been wonderful to see them settling back into classroom routines. We are also looking forward to welcoming families and carers to our parent-teacher interviews this week. These meetings provide a valuable opportunity to share your child’s progress, celebrate their achievements and discuss their learning goals for the term ahead.

English

This term, Stage 1 will be focusing on writing persuasive texts. Students will explore engaging picture books including The Day the Crayons Quit, Hey Little Ant and Zoo to develop their understanding of how authors share opinions and convince their audience. Students will learn to clearly state their opinion, provide reasons to support their argument and use persuasive language to influence their audience.

By the end of this learning, students will be working towards being able to:

• include a title

• give their opinion about a topic

• provide three reasons to support their argument

• convince their audience using persuasive language.

Mathematics

For the next seven weeks, all Stage 1 mathematics groups will be focusing on multiplication and division. Each group will be working on learning experiences matched to their current level of understanding and learning needs.

Students will develop their understanding of equal groups, sharing, grouping, repeated addition, multiplication and division strategies. They will also build their ability to explain their mathematical thinking and solve problems in different ways.

CAPA

This term, each class will continue to enjoy weekly music lessons with our specialist music teacher, Mrs Porter. We will also be dividing our classroom CAPA learning time between dance and visual arts.

Students have already enjoyed their first week of dance and will continue to explore the elements of dance, including body, space, time and energy. Through practical dance experiences, students will develop their skills in performing, composing and appreciating dance, while exploring how movement can communicate ideas, feelings and stories.

Science

In science this term, Stage 1 will be exploring weather and how it can be observed, described and recorded. Last  week, students explored the Bureau of Meteorology website and began recording daily weather data. They have been developing their scientific vocabulary by using words such as sunny and overcast to describe the weather conditions. Students were also introduced to thermometers and began recording the daily temperature. We look forward to continuing to observe and record weather patterns over the coming weeks!
