Water Safety Matters – Tips for a Safe and Confident Summer

With warmer weather on the way, it’s a great time to remind the community about the importance of water safety. Whether your child is swimming at the pool, playing at the beach, or splashing in the backyard, knowing how to stay safe around water is essential.

Top Tips for Kids:

  • Always swim with an adult watching – supervision saves lives.
  • Learn to float and tread water – these skills help in unexpected situations.
  • Stick to safe swimming areas – pools and patrolled areas are best.
  • Follow pool and beach rules – they’re there to keep everyone safe.
  • Never dive into unknown water – hidden dangers can cause serious injury.

Talking about water safety at home helps children build confidence and make smart choices. It’s also a great way to prepare for summer fun and ensure every swim is a safe one.

For more tips and resources, visit Royal Life Saving Australia or come speak with us at Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre.

Let’s work together to keep our kids safe, active, and smiling this season!

To ensure the safety of our children, parents and crossing supervisors we have been asked by City of Greater Bendigo - Community and Environmental Health Team to remind our community of the safety requirements when passing through school crossing zones.

Under the Road Safety Road Rules 2017, whenever the school crossing flags are displayed, it is illegal to stop or park:

  • 20 metres before a school crossing
  • 10 metres after a school crossing
  • within 10 metres of an intersection

If school crossing flags are displayed, you must stop for pedestrians. You must remain stopped until the crossing is clear.

During active school crossing times the speed limit is reduced to 40km/h.
