Hello, and thank you for tuning in to what 5/6 have been doing. We have been having so much fun with electricity, sports and maths outside. I’m sure all the birthday people enjoyed it as well, as we have had a couple. Hope you enjoy, bye!

Maths

In the past two weeks in maths, we have been learning about perimeter and measurement. In the morning, we went outside a couple of times to do measurements. We measured how far we can throw with our left and right arm, which one we can throw further with. We also measured how far we could jump, basically we had fun with maths. For perimeter, we created our own town drawing up all of the buildings on grid paper to match the perimeters given. We also had to work out the length of a fence around the school.

English

Over the past two weeks, we have been doing many things in English. Our class is writing a persuasive letter, but the topics are confidential though. We have researched and planned a letter so we might be able to persuade someone to get what we want. The spelling sounds are ay, ea, ey, eigh for Week 7, and Week 8 spelling sounds are words we have been doing over the term.

Science

For Science, in the past two weeks we have been learning about electricity and safety at the same time. In more detail, we learnt not to get water anywhere near or on an electrical hairdryer, hair straightener, power outlet or circuits. This is why, if you have to throw out a frayed charger or cord, it could set on fire if it gets wet, covered or hot. Moreover, just make sure you have a switchboard (power board).

PDH

We have been learning about online safety, sun safety and healthy lunchboxes. As we get older, we will get more exposed to social media and online apps, so it’s important that we know how to protect ourselves from inappropriate stuff because sometimes there are things on the internet that aren’t real, but AI makes them look real. This is why we need to prepare for the unknown.

Healthy lunchboxes are important to have a balanced, healthy diet, but it’s okay to have a treat now and then. The main reason it’s important is because we need energy and fuel to play sports like soccer, netball, baseball and more. If you want to be an athlete when you're older, some of the best athletes eat all kinds of stuff that we would probably think is gross. And that’s what we have been learning about the past two weeks.

PE

In PE, we have been practising team sports and sports that focus on certain skills, like Rob the Nest and Mini Rob the Nest. Last Friday, we played a giant game of scissors-paper-rock/the conga line. The game works by starting on your own and trying to beat others in a game of scissors-paper-rock. If you lose, you have to hold onto the back of the person. The person with the longest conga line at the end wins.

Religion

In Religion, the students who will be having their Confirmation have been taking classes with Father Perry. We recently finished learning about the Sacrament of Confirmation, the last Sacrament of Initiation. In class, we have learnt about the Ten Commandments. With Mrs Barclay, we have picked a saint and a virtue to research.

Spelling Legends

Every Friday/Monday, we have a spelling test. The students who get 20 out of 20 get their names put on the board.

Week 7 – Year 5: Lois; Year 6: Vivienne, Max, Molly & Charlotte.

Week 8 – Year 5: Lois; Year 6: Vivienne.

Birthday

On the 9th, it was Agnes’s birthday. She and Mrs Barclay made scone scrolls (brown sugar and butter) this morning. After all, it’s a class tradition!
