English – Storm Boy and the Coorong

In English, we are nearing the end of our class novel, Storm Boy by Colin Thiele. Students have enjoyed following Storm Boy’s experiences in the Coorong and exploring the novel’s themes, characters and unique Australian setting.

Alongside our reading, students are using what they have learnt about the setting to develop an information report about the Coorong. They are learning how to organise factual information into clear sections, write effective introductions and summary sentences, and use appropriate vocabulary and sentence structures to inform their reader.

At home, you might ask your child to tell you about the Coorong, explain why it is a significant environment, or share some interesting facts they have discovered while preparing their information report.

NSW English K–10 Syllabus – Stage 2 Our learning develops students’ skills in understanding and responding to literature, building vocabulary, creating written texts, and organising information for a specific purpose and audience.
