Making Maths Meaningful Every Day

Did you know your child uses maths every day, often without even realising it? Whether they're telling the time, measuring ingredients while cooking, estimating distances or managing money, numeracy is an important life skill to learn.

At Brookside College, we make maths purposeful, engaging and connected to everyday experiences so students can see why their learning matters. Our lessons combine explicit teaching, guided practice and real-world problem-solving to build confidence and understanding. By working together with families to encourage maths in everyday activities, we can help every child develop the skills they need to succeed at school and beyond. 

Families play an important role in developing children's confidence with maths. Here are simple ways to build numeracy skills every day:

1. Cook together – Measure ingredients, read recipes and discuss fractions, weights and temperatures.
2. Go shopping – Compare prices, estimate the total cost, count change and look for discounts or special offers.
3. Tell the time – Read analogue and digital clocks, plan daily routines and calculate how long activities take.
4. Play games – Board games, card games and puzzles encourage counting, strategy, pattern recognition and problem-solving.
5. Talk about numbers – Count objects, compare quantities, estimate distances and notice patterns during everyday activities.

Term 3 SSG’s are currently being held for some students. This is a great time to celebrate your child’s achievements and see the growth with their learning.

We also welcome back Ros Winfield after taking long service in term 2 allowing her time to finish home renovations. Ros has been with Brookside for 17 years working across all levels of the school. Each day comes with its own challenges and differences in the classroom. This keeps Ros on her toes.
