Year 3

Our Grade 3 classrooms have been buzzing with learning this term!

In Humanities, we've been travelling around Australia without leaving the classroom! We've been learning about Australia's states and territories, famous landmarks, climate zones and the unique features that make our country so special.

In Mathematics, we've been exploring the world of 2D and 3D shapes by identifying their features and comparing how they are alike and different. We've also been working hard to strengthen our multiplication facts and learning new strategies to solve multiplication problems with confidence.

In Reading, we've been enjoying the novel Strangers on Country. The story has sparked thoughtful discussions as we've explored different perspectives, learned about Australia's history and developed our comprehension skills.

We have plenty of exciting events coming up over the next few weeks, so be sure to keep an eye on Compass for important updates, permission forms and reminders. We can't wait to share all the fun with you!

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

Welcome Back to Term 3!

Welcome back to Term 3, Grade 4 families! We can hardly believe how quickly the year is flying by. The Grade 4 students have already been busy getting stuck into their learning, and we have lots of exciting topics and activities planned for the term ahead.

📚 Reading

In Reading, students are developing a range of important reading skills as we explore our focus text, Leo and Ralph. Students are practising how to predict, summarise, make connections, visualise, ask questions and infer meaning from the text. They have been enjoying plenty of thoughtful discussions and engaging activities that allow them to explore the characters, events and themes in the story.

✍️ Writing

In Writing, students are building their narrative writing skills by creating interesting settings and characters. We have been learning how to use techniques such as Show, Don't Tell and the five senses to help readers imagine and experience a setting. Students have also been developing characters by exploring their actions, thoughts and feelings. We are looking forward to seeing these skills come together as students create their own exciting narratives!

🔢 Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have begun exploring fractions and time. Students are learning about equivalent fractions and using fraction walls to explore relationships between fractions such as thirds, sixths and twelfths, as well as fourths, eighths and sixteenths. They are also learning to represent fractions on number lines and understand how fractions can be combined to make a whole. Alongside fractions, students are developing their skills in reading and telling the time. They are practising reading analogue clocks to the minute and using language such as o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We are also working towards reading and understanding a wide range of times throughout the day.

🌏 Humanities

In Humanities, students have put on their geographical hats and are exploring the world around us! They are learning about the continents and the major oceans that separate them, as well as compass directions, the Equator and the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Students are enjoying discovering how our world is organised and represented on maps, and we have lots more geographical learning to explore throughout the term!

🔬 Science

In Science, students are becoming materials detectives! They are investigating a range of natural and made materials and exploring their different properties and characteristics.

Students will be learning how to describe materials using words such as strong, flexible, waterproof, absorbent, smooth, rough, hard and soft. Throughout the term, they will take part in a range of hands-on experiences and investigations involving different fibres and materials. These activities will encourage students to observe closely, compare materials and think about why particular materials are suitable for different purposes.

💻 Health

In Health, students are learning about cyber safety and ways to stay safe and responsible when using technology and the internet.

We have also been discussing cyberbullying, bullying and unkind behaviour. Students are learning about the differences between these behaviours and why it is important to understand what is happening, so they know when and how to seek help from a trusted adult.

We are already looking forward to an exciting few days of adventure, new experiences and wonderful memories!

Year 5

It has been a great start to Term 3 in Year 5!

In Reading, students have begun exploring our class novel, Tom Appleby, Convict Boy.

Through this historical fiction text, students are developing their comprehension skills bymaking predictions, identifying figurative language and language devices, using the RACE strategy to answer comprehension questions, and summarising important themes, events,and chapters. They are also learning about life in colonial Australia and making connectionsbetween the novel and historical events.

In Writing, students are creating their own historical fiction narratives inspired by life in the1700s. They are learning how to write descriptive paragraphs that bring characters andsettings to life by focusing on character reactions, emotions, thoughts, and historicallyaccurate language. Students are also strengthening their spelling knowledge by learning andapplying spelling rules, including Greek roots such as eco and phon, to help themunderstand the meaning and spelling of unfamiliar words.

In Mathematics, our focus this term is on fractions and angles. Students are developing their understanding of place value, comparing and ordering decimals, and making connections between the fractions and decimals. They are also exploring angles by identifying, measuring and classifying different types of angles, while applying their knowledge to solve real-world problems.

In Science, students are investigating the properties of solids, liquids and gases. Through hands-on experiments and investigations, they are exploring how materials behave, how they can change state, and how particles are arranged in each state of matter.

In Humanities, our focus is economics and business. Students are learning about needs and wants, goods and services, and the different types of resources used to produce products. They will also investigate how businesses and entrepreneurs contribute to the community and economy.

In Health, students are exploring respectful relationships and developing strategies for building positive friendships, communicating effectively and managing conflict. Through discussions and activities, they are learning the importance of empathy, cooperation andmaking responsible choices.

We look forward to another exciting Term of learning and watching our Year 5 studentscontinue to grow in confidence and independence.

Year 6

The Grade 6 students have made a fantastic start to Term 3 and have settled back into classroom routines with enthusiasm. We have an exciting term ahead, with interschool sports and the Book Week Parade coming up. It's hard to believe we're already more than halfway through the school year. It really is true that time flies when you're having fun!

In Reading, we have begun reading Once by Morris Gleitzman. As we read, students are using a range of comprehension strategies to deepen their understanding of the text, including making predictions and inferences, identifying themes, and analysing character development. They are enjoying the novel and are gradually building on their understanding of World War II and the Holocaust; the historical setting in which the story takes place.

In Writing, students have been exploring a variety of historical periods, including the Stone Age and Ancient Egypt. They will use their research and knowledge of a historical era to write a historical narrative that combines accurate historical facts with fictional characters and events.

In Mathematics, for our Number unit, we are focusing on fractions. Students have been adding and subtracting fractions, finding equivalent fractions, and placing fractions on number lines. In our Space unit, they have been investigating the properties of three-dimensional shapes, by identifying their features and exploring the two-dimensional cross-sections created when the shapes are sliced.

In Science, we have begun our Chemical Sciences unit. Throughout the term, students will investigate physical and chemical changes, while exploring the differences between reversible and irreversible changes through a range of hands-on learning experiences.

In Humanities, our Economics unit is helping students develop an understanding of budgeting and managing money, building valuable financial literacy skills.

In Health, students are learning about cultural understanding and the importance of valuing diversity. In Respectful Relationships, our focus is on recognising and managing stress, while developing practical strategies to support positive wellbeing.
