Welcome to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program – Grade 3
Welcome to Term 3 and an exciting semester in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (SAKG) Program! We are delighted to welcome our Grade 3 students into the kitchen and garden, where they will develop new skills, build confidence, and enjoy working together.
Our first kitchen lesson focused on introducing students to the kitchen environment. We explored how to work safely in the space and learnt about some of the equipment we will be using throughout the semester. Students were introduced to everyday kitchen items such as a colander, whisk and tea towel, discussing what each is used for and why it is an important tool in the kitchen. You might like to continue these conversations at home and even involve your child in some cooking. Working together in the kitchen is a wonderful way to practise new skills while creating something delicious!
Students were also introduced to their kitchen groups for the semester:
To begin their SAKG journey, students designed colourful covers for their Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden books. We were so impressed by the creativity and care shown in these designs. Be sure to check out some of the fantastic covers created by the students in 3A!

In the garden, students learnt how to correctly put on their gardening gloves and discovered a handy trick for keeping pairs together by folding them into one another—just like a pair of socks! This simple task helps develop hand strength and coordination, so a fun homework challenge could be to practise matching and folding socks together at home.

Our garden tour gave students a chance to explore the space and learn about the different jobs they will be taking on throughout the semester. There is plenty growing at the moment, including vibrant silverbeet, peas in abundance, and mini womboks.
We look forward to watching the garden continue to flourish as students help care for it over the coming weeks.

We are excited for a fantastic term of learning, growing, cooking, and working together!
