Grade 3

Camp
The students enjoyed an overnight stay at Briars Camp. From the moment they arrived, students were ready to challenge themselves, try new things and make unforgettable memories with their friends. Throughout the camp, students had the opportunity to experience a range of exciting activities, including the Giant Swing, Low Ropes, Canoeing, Archery and Flying Fox. There were plenty of opportunities to step outside their comfort zones, show courage and encourage one another along the way. We are incredibly PROUD of their Respect and Daring-ness and we know students are too. What a fantastic first camp experience!
Literacy
This term, Grade 3 students will be exploring the wonderful novel The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate. Through the story, we will explore themes of friendship, kindness, courage, freedom and how we should treat animals. As part of our novel study, students will also be writing a persuasive letter about whether circuses should have animals. We will explore different points of view, use ideas and evidence from the novel to support our thinking, and learn how to write persuasively by giving clear reasons and examples to convince our readers.
Maths
In Mathematics, we have been learning all about data and how we can use it to answer questions. Students have explored how to write clear and specific questions for an investigation and choose the most suitable way to collect information. We have collected both categorical data, such as favourite colours or sports, and discrete numerical data, such as the number of siblings students have. Students have practised conducting surveys, using tally marks to record responses and organising their results into frequency tables.
We have also been learning how to represent and interpret data in different ways. Students have used frequency tables to create pictographs, ensuring that their data is accurately represented using a 1-to-2 correspondence. To apply their learning, students have developed their own questions with four possible answers, collected data from their peers, organised their results into a frequency table and created a pictograph to display their findings. This has helped students understand how data can be collected, organised and represented to communicate information clearly.
