Grade 2

Literacy

This week in Literacy, students continued to develop their  reading and spelling skills. We focused on developing comprehension strategies and strengthening reading fluency by practising expression, accuracy and pace. A key focus was on monitoring and analysing texts, drawing on students’ growing knowledge of context, text structures and language features to develop both literal and inferred meaning.

In Spelling, students explored different ways to represent the ‘j’ sound including the letter patterns ‘ge’, ‘dge’, and the trigraph ‘tch’. Students also practised reading, writing and sharing sentences using tricky words: interesting, would, and wouldn’t.

Writing

In Writing, students have been developing their recount writing skills by writing about their holiday experiences. They have been learning to organise their ideas in sequence and include interesting details to engage their readers. We have also been revising punctuation, exploring how conjunctions can be used to join ideas and practising neat, consistent handwriting. Students have been working hard to make their writing clear, detailed and enjoyable to read.

Maths

In Mathematics, Grade 2 students have been learning about halves, doubles and quarters. We have been practising how to find half of a whole amount by sharing an amount equally into two groups. Students have also been learning how to double a given amount to find the whole amount. For example, if half of a number is 6, we can double 6 to find that the whole amount is 12. We have also explored quarters and discovered that finding a quarter means halving and then halving again. For example, to find one quarter of 20, we can halve 20 to get 10, and then halve 10 to get 5. Students have been using objects, drawings and number strategies to help them understand these concepts and explain their mathematical thinking.
