Sr Leonie Peterson CJ
The John XXIII College community mourns the passing of Sr Leonie Peterson CJ, who passed away on 24 May 2026, aged 88. Sr Leonie's connection to our Loreto heritage was lifelong. She was educated at Loreto Claremont, graduating in 1954, and joined the Loreto Sisters in 1956. She returned to Loreto Claremont as a teacher from 1965 to 1969 – taking Lower Secondary Maths, English and History – while also caring for the boarding students and playing guitar with the folk singing group.
Her service in religious life took her across Australia and to Rome, where she served as a General Consultor for the Loreto Sisters. She came back to Perth in 1995 and joined the John XXIII College Pastoral Staff, working with students, staff and parents until 2002. From 2005 until her retirement at the end of 2018, she was a familiar presence in the Mary Ward Centre and the Learning Enrichment Centre.
Those who knew Sr Leonie remember her ready humour and her genuine care for every person she met. She was a perceptive listener who gave each encounter her full attention. May she rest in peace.
