World Scholars Cup
Congratulations to our World Scholars Teams who competed in the Perth Regional Round of the World Scholars Cup at Sacred Heart College last Friday and at Kingsway Christian College on Saturday. Over 600 students took part in this year’s competition – the largest number of competitors in a Perth round. Our teams researched, discussed, and debated topics ranging from science, art, and music to history, literature, and more. Their outstanding achievements were recognised at the Closing Ceremony, where our students won gold and silver medals, as well as Champion Scholar trophies, across a wide range of categories.
Special mention to the following trophy-winning teams:
- Holly Harrison, Madeleine Miller and Rosie O’Toole: 5th place in Team Bowl
- Lucinda Leong and Mila Tegg, accompanied by Eve Campbell (from the International School of WA): 2nd place in Team Debate; 2nd place in Team Bowl; and 2nd place Overall in the Junior Division
Our Overall Champion Scholars (with the highest number of points across all rounds) were:
| Junior Division | Senior Division |
|---|---|
1. Madeleine Miller (Year 8) 2. Mila Tegg (Year 8) 3. Holly Harrison (Year 8) | 1. James Sommerfield (Year 10) 2. Niamh Jennings (Year 9) 3. Olive Keane (Year 10)
|
We would also like to recognise Henry McGlue (Year 10), who was selected for the Debate Showcase. For this event, the top speakers from each delegation (based on Day 1 Debate scores) form new mixed teams and debate a new motion in front of all in attendance. A masterclass in debating, as it were. Henry was the final speaker for the affirmative team, debating the motion: ‘That Perth is there.’
I would like to thank Mr Webber (Head of English), Ms Roberts (Mathematics Department), and Mr Connellan (Science Department) for their support and assistance.
The highlight of this competition for me was certainly seeing the wonderful camaraderie among the students, supporting each other throughout the two days and hi-fiving and cheering each other at the Closing Ceremony. Truly embodying our College values: ‘being people for others’. I commend all our teams on being outstanding College ambassadors. The superb achievements of our scholars have qualified them for the Global Rounds of the World Scholars Cup.

Ethics Olympiad provides students with a unique opportunity to develop skills in critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. It is designed to get students thinking, talking, and ultimately working together on some of the tough moral issues of our time. Its objective is to do more than just help students think through ethical issues: It is to teach students how to think through ethical issues together, as fellow citizens in a complex moral and political community. This international competition is open to students in Years 7 to 9. Team positions are highly coveted, with only 10 spots available. Expressions of interest are due Monday, 22 June (Week 19).
