Marine Ecosystem in Port Phillip Bay

The marine ecosystem in Port Phillip Bay is very important to Melbourne as we rely on it for so many things. Port Phillip Bay is a major environmental, social, and economic asset which supports the city's identity, culture, and economy, including the Port of Melbourne which is a vital hub for cargo transport. It also brings in many tourists as it is a very popular destination for people to visit when they come to Melbourne and the towns all around the bay.

Port Phillip Bay relies on us just as much. Melbourne is super crucial to Port Phillip Bay because the city's development, including its port and heavy industry, has significantly impacted the bay's beaches and waters. The bay is also a vital natural resource for the city and the surrounding regions but our impact isn’t always a good impact. We need to stop destroying the bay's ecosystem and one of the biggest ways communities can do that is by understanding that everything we wash down the drain goes into the bay.

The Marine Ambassadors are spending next Thursday experiencing the beauty of Port Philip Bay from the water where we will have the opportunity to swim with seals and, hopefully, dolphins! This is the first part of our journey as Marine Ambassadors and we will be sharing more about how students and the community of OPS can make a difference to the health of our precious bay.
