Year 7 News

As we reach the end of Term 3, it is a great opportunity to reflect on how far our Year 7 students have come in their first year of secondary school. Throughout the term, students have continued to grow in confidence, independence and resilience as they navigate the challenges and opportunities that come with high school.

Term 3 has provided students with a wide range of opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. From engaging learning tasks and hands-on activities to sporting, cultural and House events, our Year 7 students have continued to show enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved. It has been fantastic to see friendships strengthen, teamwork skills develop and students demonstrate our school values through their everyday interactions.

Recent Learning Behaviour Updates have also highlighted some fantastic growth across the cohort. It has been pleasing to see many students making positive improvements in their engagement, organisation and approach to learning. As we head into the final term, we encourage students to continue building on this progress and taking responsibility for getting the most out of their learning.

Parent Teacher Conversations are scheduled for week 10 and provide an important opportunity for families to connect with teachers, discuss student progress and identify areas to focus on moving forward. We strongly encourage all families to book a conversation and work alongside teachers to support their child as they head into the final term of Year 7.

As we prepare for Term 4, our focus will remain on maintaining positive learning behaviours, being prepared and on time for class, and continuing to build the independence expected of our students. Term 4 will be another busy and exciting term as students work towards finishing their first year of secondary school strongly.

We are incredibly proud of the progress our Year 7 students have made so far and look forward to seeing them continue to grow throughout Term 4.

Attendance

This year, our aim is to improve student attendance rates to an average above 95%. If your student is absent, please contact Kurnai’s absence hotline message bank on (03) 5165 0600 - option 1 or contact Ross Johnson directly via Compass. 

Uniform

We have recently noticed an increase in students wearing black pants and shorts to school. A reminder that black pants and shorts are not part of the Kurnai College school uniform, and students are expected to attend school in the correct uniform each day. We understand that there can sometimes be challenges around accessing or purchasing uniform items. If your family requires any support in obtaining the correct uniform, please reach out to the school so we can assist.

Being Ready to Learn

A major focus moving forward is continuing to build high expectations and accountability, particularly around students being on time to class and prepared for learning. Being punctual to every lesson is an important habit and will remain a key focus across the year level. We are also asking students to take greater responsibility for arriving at class with the equipment they need, including their books, pens, charged device and other required learning materials. Families can support us by regularly checking in with their child to ensure they have the necessary equipment organised and ready for each school day. By working together and maintaining consistent expectations, we can help students develop the organisation, responsibility and positive habits they need to be successful at school.

Resilience and Relationships

Throughout Term 3, our Year 7 R&R sessions have had a continued focus on building resilience and supporting students to develop the skills needed to navigate challenges both in and out of the classroom. Through class discussions, activities and House Championship games, students have explored the importance of perseverance, positive thinking, teamwork and learning from setbacks. It has been great to see students encouraging one another, stepping outside their comfort zones and continuing to build the confidence and resilience that will support them throughout their secondary school journey.

Science

In this week's science lessons, students have had the opportunity to practice their surgical skills by completing dissections.
